Hi all! FIRST POSTING.

I bought this car a few moths ago and found the turbo operation a bit strange! We have a Galaxy 1.9 Tdi also and the turbo is working all the time with no surge @ 2300 rpm or a certain temp. I have been to several Fiat main dealers and ALL tell me a different story about what criteria this 'surge' needs to operate! Is it correct that the engine needs to reach normal working temp and 2300 rpm before this 'surge' kicks in? I always thought that the turbo starts working as soon as the engine starts. The car is quite sluggish until this temp and rpm are reached.
Also when on idol and especailly from cold, the engine seems or sounds like it is 'pumping' something. Is this normal?
Can anyone explain to me what this 'surge' is, if the turbo works from start up? This is not turbo 'lag', I've experienced that before.
This may be how this particular diesel engine works but I have never come across this configuration before.

Hope someone can help as I despair at the Fiat dealers!! :bang:

Cheers in advance..Eddie. (y)

Hi, I also have a Mk2 JTD elx and also use a Ford Mondeo TDCI 130 for work.

I thought it was just me, but yes, the fiat does seem more sluggish when cold. Once warmed up it's seems to have more beans !!

I don't seem to get any lag or sluggishness though, I can hear my turbo spinning up and is audiable over the engine noise upto 4000 rpm.

As much as I like the fiat, it's not as quick as the mondeo, which is a pity... 1.9 jtd 80hp 1.9 TDCI 130hp Doesn't seem fair somehow !!!

a welcome to the forum to you both :)

Some cars do have turbos that only kick in at a set rev rather than more progressive turbos - my Grandfather's old granada 2.5TD did that, it was set far too high, normal driving you never got anywhere near the turbo!

i have a 94 punto td sx and it seems to run better in the cold the turbo works straight away from startup. i work for a company that preps up new renaults for hire car companys, and i drive new megane diesels all day and they seem more sluggish to start with than my car.or could it just be me hating renaults lol.
