Had my car in the Fiat garage last week due to engine not starting up. Problem was ECU that was rectified, and everything was going great. I was advised to use the Redex petrol treatment liquid for smoother running.

Just on Friday I was driving back home and whilst on the motorway the fuel injection light appeared repeatedly after a few mins or so. Then all of a sudden the engine started to jump and make a strange noise. It was as though the engine was starving for fuel. Anyhow I managed to get home.

I noticed smoke appearing from the exhaust....after I got home.

I started it up this morning, it was running fine until after a few minutes, the fuel injection light remained on and the engine started to shudder. I took it round the block for a test drive and it seems to struggle more whilst driving uphill.

Now I don't know whether the problem is linked to the work carried out by the Fiat garage on the ECU or the Redex treatment which I used. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be and how it could be rectified ?
I've spent so much on this car already in this month alone, me thinks its time to get rid of it.

dave...

what is the coil pack ? is it a big job and what cost is involved...I'm surprised Fiat did not pick up on this, even though it is stated on the invoice that coil 1 and 2 were checked.

redex petrol injector treatment was used on a full tank of petrol.

coil pack is other end of the plug leads from the plugs there are 2, easyest way to check them is to get a spare plug pull a plug lead off a plug and pop the spare plug in turn engine over an see if it sparks, do the same on 1 of the leads from the other coil pack if no spark a coil pack is dead, if you havent got a spare plug you will have to take 1 of yours out an use that.

Hi

Just an update.

Coil pack replaced and error codes cleared by my garage. Was running fine until this morning whilst driving to work ,same problem same story.

Fuel injection light keeps appearing after every few mins or so, whilst it does car starts to sound like a bangar and engine loses power.

I've taken back to the garage and he's determined its the ECU at fault again. He's going to try and get hold of a ECU from a scrappy and see whether it solves the problem.

Does anyone know what it possibly could be. Surely it has to be fuel injection related hence the light appearing every time. Any help would be great.

Did a general start up today, blue smoke start and fuel injection light staying on. Engine is sounds as though its dyeing !

Its going to the garage tomoro. Still unsure of the problem....

Same problem

I got about same problem.

Here is what i experienced.

I was driving on M1 at top speed when the light came up.

Nothing to the engine, only an indicator but after some time my engine lost some power, and a few jerks.
Solution that time, slow down to 60 - light went down.

Some days later again on the M1, Top speed and light goes on again, same solution applied.

It was start of my 5 day road trip, i kept driving at low speed or cutting down speed after the warning light.

No noise from engine, no power loss - just work for me as a speed warning.

Is it serious for long run?

what should i do?

doesnt mean its to do with the fuel injection, its a general engine fault light.

could be the engine temp sensor for the ECU *shrug*

Taking these words, it can or can not be the fuel injection problem.

Can any body point me to the way to clean the fuel injection using some liquid thing i heard about.

BTW, its M Reg - Punto 55

"get hold of a ECU from a scrappy"

Could be wrong but I thought the code box was programmed to the ECU so trying one from another car would be useless?

How did the garage 'rectify' the original problem?

hi
i posted something similar ("cough & splutter") in this forum a week or so ago... don't know if you're having exactly the same problem, but the symptoms sound very similar.

the upshot being, my car's now back from the garage and, touch wood, is ok. and the problem was:

"fault located to a fault crank shaft sensor and the bottom pulley is also damaged and needs replacing. ignition trace is poor and new HT leads will need to be fitted to rectify misfire"

costings were:
£45 - diagnostic check and testing
£28.19 - HT leads
£58.07 - crank shaft sensor
£83.25 - cranks shaft pulley
£70 - labour
+ vat

ps. this was for a '99 T-reg 60sx
