I need to change my rear brake shoes, which i know should be easy enough, but the only problem is i'm finding it impossible to remove the drums from the hub. Admittedly they're pretty rusty, but i've coated them in WD40, and they won't budge. Has anyone else ever had this problem? If so did you sort it?

Tony, just so you know I am the idiot on here when it comes to cars. However, I believe your problem is caused by a lip being formed around the edge of the drum. The shoes generally don't make it right up to the edge and when you brake, they wear away towards the centre of the drum and not right up to the edge.

So that sounds like why it's a problem, how do you fix it? :S I'll let somebody with more experience answer that as I wouldn't want to say anything wrong.

Cheers guys, i gave that ebay link a go, but got outbid in the last minute :bang: I'll have to try the local tool shop. I'll let u know how it goes once i've got the bloody thing.

dont know if this is any help but read it in my mk2 punto haynes manual.

if the drum is binding on the brake shoes the drums can be drawn off as follows, hold teh drum still and turn the hub so that the drum and hub flange bolt holes no longer line up. Screw 2 bolts into the locating stud threaded holes in the drum and progressivly tighten them agaisnt the hub flange to push the dum from the hub

thanks fishdude, i tried that mate, but it still wouldn't budge. Problem was i couldn't turn the hub independantly from the drum

Use the Haynes method, with the bolts in tight, if it is not coming off evenly at both sides of the drum, tap the drum face on with a hammer lightly so it's even, it'll very likely come straight off then.

Don’t use a claw hammer in between the drum and the back plate as you're likely to damage the back plate which you will then need to replace too.

Persevere, it can be a pain to get off but it will come.

yea , sorry ,didn't notice the date either :)

I was searching for brake drum and this was fairly near the top, looking for an answer to my self adjuster question, didn't find a result so posted and dave has kindly answered me!
