I have a 1.2 8v Punto Active (2002 model, owned from new, now on 44,500 miles) which has already had a replacement ECU (fitted under warranty) after approx 20 months/36,000 miles. On two occasions in the last month the engine has simply died. The clock/trip meter/mpg computer gets reset and the car simply will not start - engine turns over OK but there's no life on the ignition side of things. After approx 20 mins, and several attempts to start the engine finally starts and runs smoothly, but the amber ECU light remains on. The next time I try to start the car it's as if nothing had gone wrong - the only indication I have that there was a problem is that the clock is not correct and the trip meter shows the miles travelled since the eng9ine cut out.

I've searched this forum and elsewhere and I cannot find any other reports of this particular problem. Does anyone have any suggestions as to possible causes and solutions?

Regards,
Baldsimon.

Hi there,

It sounds like I am currently encountering exactly the same problems, this has been happening more frequently over the past couple of weeks.

The only times I've been having the problems is either first thing in the morning or after work. It seems like it isn't liking the cold or the damp.

I have found a temporary solution to get the car started quickly.

Try bump starting the car, but nothing will happen then try starting it normally. It has started every time.

Please advise.

hi fiat guru here,
As regards to your question check for fiat plugs! check if the plugs have 9GYSSR stamped on them if not, they are not genuine plugs! and will not have the correct resistance.
If the plugs are all ok it either going to be a bad connection to body computer or bad body computer, most likely bad body computer.

From kinedders and help you need please PM us :D

Thanks for that, when the car get home i'm gonna check the Spark plugs. We took it to a garage last week and that's basicly what they said.

But they said we needed both.

Was that new ECU re-programmed?

As far as I know the ECU was replaced - the warranty issue arose 'cos it the engine suddenly went into "limp-home" mode when I was on the motorway. Bummer! When I took the car to the FIAT dealer they told me that there was a recall on the ECU for that very reason. Mine was replaced about a week before I had the official notice from FIAT UK about the recall.

For what it's worth, I've been running on Bosch plugs for the last 12000 miles or so.

yeah recall 4679, thats where the e.c.u is re-programmed or in some cases new e.c.u. if that has been done that would leave the spark plugs, once you check them and if they are o.k, you will need to bring it into a dealership where a examiner test will be carried out :D
