Just had the classic fault on a 1997 Punto that was smelling of petrol in the car.

The pipe on the fuel pump was fractured, so I changed the complete unit.

Now the car starts fine, runs OK when in a high gear but lacks the acceleration it had before I changed the pump. Any ideas?
