Hey!

Just a quick one, after using the search function found no threads with what i was looking for.

After the engine had been running for about 30mins, stop and starting with lights etc, I noticed smoke coming from the underside of the car,

I luckly reached a small carpark and inspected where the smoke was coming from, and noticed it was coming from the Catlic convertor. Or so i think the part in question is located at the start of the exhaust pipe, (under driver/passenger seat) it almost looks knitted? :confused:

Sorry my discription is abit pants but i'm as good with cars as the greenfly thats just drowned in my coffee. :bang: need to boil the kettle agian, but that's off topic.

Is this the catalic (sorry if that's spelt wrong) convertor? or is it just the start to the exhaust pipe? The main back box and pipe seem new, but i think the cat may have been on since new, so that 85k miles out of it (probably due a replacment?).

Hopefully someone can help? but if you need any more information on the description of the part, do not hesitate to ask.

So could you please tell me what cost i'm looking at to replace? and is it a case of just replacing the cat? or is it the pipe/back box as well?

Cheers in advance (y):slayer::D

the bit that looks knitted is not the cat but a flexi joint fitted to systems to abosrb noise and shocks to the exhaust system. Think this is what your possibly looking at

. If the joint has gone or it's corroded then it will blow possibly like you mention. You'll know if the cat has gone as it makes a hell of an awful sound.

(y)Hey peeps!

Just a little thank you, for your speedy replies! I posted that before i left work yesterday, so on arrival at home i checked again i still smelt burning but no smoke from the flexi pipe you've described. or the cat,

Long storey short, I remember after i had my wipers fixed the fiat garage did there "health checks" (or as i like to say, set you up for a scam checks.) and they had outlined a fault (small leak) in the rocker gasket. so what has been happening is the slight leak in the gasket has been dripping oil on to the hot exhaust pipe/engine causing smell and smoke.

obviously you can't see it to agree but would you reckon this could be correct? as you mentioned the noise when an exhaust blows, and there has been no sign of the cat being ready to go (increase in noise etc).

so i think i may be lucky, but i am ready to pay the expectd £60 for a new cat. :bang:

Cheers again! (y):cool:
