Hi everyone,

Love this forum but didn't think I'd be back so soon with more q's!

Last night I was driving home and the fuel injection warning light came on for about five mins. I stopped the car for about ten mins, then carried on and it didn't come back on the rest of the way home.

When the mechanic fitted my starter motor, he did it from the top (and I thought it was supposed to be done from below?) and he took off the box-thing that says Fuel Injection.

I also replaced the air filter a couple of days ago.

Does anyone think that these problems could be linked? Maybe one of us put something back wrong?

Rang Fiat this morning and they said it would cost £60 for a diagnostic.

Hmm, any ideas guys?

It could be that something is loose and is giving an intermittent fault. The trouble with diagnostic machines are that they don't always tell the real story ie if a fuse was protecting a circuit with a sensor on it, the fuse could blow but the diagnostic machine may think that the sensor was broken.

I'd go back to the mechanic and get him to undo everything he touched and fit it together again, he maybe missed something.

Ive had that on my car. Does it occasionally splutter and feel as if it wants to cut out?

If so - that happened to my car about 2 months ago (before I got heater matrix problems) . Every now and again the light would come n and the car would splutter, but them seem fine. I think its related to my breaking down incident yesterday - injection light came on permenantly and car growled. (I was right outside a fiat garage when it happened). They have told me it is the HT leads and a coil.

When I first got the car, it did the occasional light on thing too, but I replaced the HT leads and it corrected the problem (until yesterday!!). I think they cost approx £45 for a full set (for a punto mk1 55s - fiat parts quoted me that).

Thanks for your replies!

So far, I've been quite lucky and the injection light has only come on that once. I feel sort of stuck because I don't want the mechanic to come back if the problem is gonna go away, but I don't want my little car to leave me somewhere (though outside a fiat garage is not too bad!) Thankfully it hasn't sounded like it's wanted to cut out so far.

JoJo, did they do a diagnostic test on your car or just look under the bonnet?

I think they just looked really. I didnt check again cos it was dark and i didnt have a torch with me. Prior to the light coming on permanently it felt like it wanted to stall, had to really rev it to get it moving off from the lights. If the light came on for just a minute or so but the performance seems fine, then my friends did that once or twice - but was fine. Apparently the light can occasionally come on but nothing is wrong with the car, so long as the light goes off again. I noticed it once but the car was fine (when i first bought it) and I put it down to not having much petrol in the car. I filled it up and then i had no more light on incidents until i noticed problems and checked the leads the first time.

I knew it was HT leads the first time because I disconnected them one by one from the sparks and one lead had a hole in it! burnt right through. I replaced it and the car ran great again. Might be worth having a quick look at them and see if there is any hole/burning/bubbling of the plastic at the end of the leads.
