Hi

I was parking my W-reg 1.2 8v, I had the wheel on full lock and there was like a clunk and my power power steering completely died and the red steering wheel came on.

So i struggled around all day with no power steering (never driven a car without it before!)

anyway, i got in the car that night and started it, the steering light didn't come on and my power steering had returned!! I was chuffed, i did notice it was buzzing a lot when i turned it though

However I got to a traffic light on a corner and came to a halt with the wheel slightly turned...clunk, it died again, and it hasn't come back since :(

whats happened? power steering fluid? or is my motor knackered? if its the motori know its a pricy job and i won't be fixing it anytime soon

please help!

The power steering is electric and failure well documented, I will hasten to say NOT just on Fiats.... Around £500 to fix properly I believe, new PAS motor and set up for the body computer to recognise it (I think)

Haha, i thought that, why bother paying for a gym membership when you could just break your car's power steering!

no but seriously, i've heard if I get a new power steering motor and find somewhere to fit it, you don't need fiat to calibrate it as haynes says?

Doesn't sound like its the case to me but my power steering kept failing not long back, If I stopped the car, applied the steering lock, took it off again and started it back up it went away. This happened intermittantly for months, so i took it to a garage who said it was probably something to do with the steering lock being faulty.

However not long after I changed my battery and since then it didn't happen, I have read somewhere that if the battery is running low it doesn't power up the steering motor properly.

Seeing as your steering is malfunctioning whilst the car is running though, would suggest its not the battery :(

Might still be something to do with the steering lock though.

As for fixing it if is is knackered, I would suggest buying a reconditioned unit, not a new one from FIAT, this cuts a bit of cost on the parts and makes the garage bill a bit smaller still.
