hey guys... quick question regarding a change of engine.

is it possible to change the engine in my punto (mk2) from the 1.2 8v to the 1.8hgt

i know it would be a big job but i'm just wondering what would be involved and if it would even fit.

has anybody on the forum had any experience with changing engines and if so could you please give me some advice on what is involved.

i'm just looking for some more power but cant really afford to sell the punto i have now in order to get a different engine model. i know remaps are usually the way to go for the 8v but i'd like a little more power than a remap would provide and i figured if i'm gonna change engines then why bother with a 1.4. i'd rather just go for the biggest engine possible if it is indeed possible lol

anyway if anyone can provide me with some help on this matter it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance to any1 who can help out

i dont get the logic?
for the insurance increase and costs for change/upgrades (eg brakes)/engine costs you could buy another car

i already have another car for every day use and the punto is a project so i just need to know if it is technicly possible to do as i found a donor hgt for next to nothing if i want it.

Yes it is possible. Why wouldn't it be?

Of course it will fit, the engine bay and whole car is the same.

You'll need everything from the donor car - looms, engine, box, mounts, abs and TCS sensors, hubs, rear beam, suspension, brakes, dials, etc.

It's a total waste of time and effort. Sell your 8v and buy an HGT. You can get a minter for £2000-2400. Cheaper insurance. Less effort. Less ballache. You know everything is sorted.

You would set yourself up for a project and a half doing this, and you may as well throw away those new springs you've just bought since they will be useless with the heavier engine.

Also, I assume you are running on 240mm discs on the front (257mm with ABS) and drums on the rear. You will want vented 257mm discs on the front and 240mm discs on the rear to cope with the extra weight and power safely. The conversion is possible, just a bit of a pain sourcing HGT parts cheaply.

I am not sure, but I think you need an uprated fuel pump, exhaust, cooling system etc... etc...

If you are really desperate to uprate the power, consider paying a visit to GSR Engineering: Fiat. With a reprofiled cam, ported and skimmed head, GSR induction kit, Supersprint exhaust, and a remap, you can get up to 85bhp out of your 1.2 motor. With an uprated fuel pump, gains of up to 70% (102bhp) are possible. The key advantage of this is that you will not have a big great 1.8 litre lump hanging over the front wheels. If you ask me, Fiat got it right using the 1.4 turbo like they do in the old GT and the Grande Abarth.

ink you need an uprated fuel pump, exhaust, cooling system etc... etc...

You need EVERYTHING from the HGT.

None of the 8v or sporting stuff can be used, it's all totally different.

the 1.4 16v engine are surprisingly quick! and the engine is much lighter compared to the 1.8!

Is not just about the capacity of the engine, remeber yours is only 8v, the 16v will provide much much much more.

ok cheers for all the input guys. i think i was a little naive thinking it could be done with relative ease. i forgot that the hgt has alot more features than the lower models and thus as people have said pretty much everything would have to be changed.

the reason i asked in the first place was just that i don't know exactly what is wrong with the donor 1.8 i found. now i'm thinking it will save alot of time and money to find out what's actually wrong with it and have it repaired if it's not going to be too expensive then just sell the 8v.

anyway thanks guys.. really appreciate the help.
