Hi, yesterday I stupidly and accidently drove over some rather large garden display rocks, thought nothing of it really, I came out this morning to my Punto and I discovered a leak of oil under the engine bay.

On a closer inspection I have dent in the downpipe just after the manifold leading onto the rest of the exhaust system, and oil leaking and slowly dripping from the tank behind/kinda above the pipe coming from the manifold with the dent in (will and get a picture tomorrow, is dark now). Was just wondering if anyone knew what it could be? and when I locate the crack or hole, I was thinking of using an exhaust compound to seal the joint up, good idea or bad? Just I want to keep the costs of fixing this problem to a minimum at the moment as I just sorta smashed my punto up and need a few parts for it :\.

One more thing, anyone suggest a place to get a drivers side front quarter panel from? I've looked in a few breakers and scrappies where I live but all the mark 2 punto front quarters are always dented, and Fiat want quite alot for a new one, which I don't need new 'cos I will be respraying the panel anyway.

Thanks all!

That sounds like your sump. exhaust gunk wont work to fix that. Check your engine oil level!

Does it have a crack/hole in the actual sump? (if it did i would be surprised you got home with it, the oil should be supewing out!)

It could just need resealing as the knock may of broken the seal between the sump and the head.

If the sump is damaged though you may get away with welding a metal plate onto it, or its new sump time im afraid.

Checked my oil level, its still all good, I recently topped it up so I know where the oil level was at before it happened.

I can't see a crack, but I'm getting it up on the stands tomorrow so hopefully that will give me some insight on the situation (will also provide a picture, was at brands hatch today:cool:)

A friend did say that the manifold pipe might of knocked a bolt loose on it, but if it's just a seal then could be that.

thanks for your reply.

and thanks JayEm but I'm really trying to look for a 2nd hand one seeing as It's gunna need spraying anyway.

If it needs resealing you can get a tube of the sealer from fiat, its black in colour. Just take your sump off, be carefull not to damage the mating surfaces.

Give it all a good clean, remove any old sealer and oil (with degreaser)

Then apply a bead of sealer all round the sump and fit it in one (dont place it on and then pull it off again as the sealer wont stick then)

Do the bolts up until the sealer starts to pinch and ooze out a little, leave it for 30 mins or so then do the bolts up to correct torque.
