My drivers side window doesn't operate - when you press the buttons you can hear the motor whirring, but the window itself doesn't go down (or up.)

I tried briefly taking off the door panel but didn't get very far as I didn't know what I was doing basically.

Any tips/help?

try taking off the switches for the window.theres only tiny wee bit of plastic holding it in position to touch the contact points inside.if they are broken wont make contact with the buttons to make window go down or up.

You will need to remove door panel to get to the window motor, check for any loose parts or cables or it could me the motor needs replacing as it may be damaged inside.

The motor still whirrs when I press the buttons which implies it still gets the signal from the buttons.. could it still be this? worth checking?

I did remove the door panel but I got stuck after that - what to look for etc. I didn't see anything loose. :(

With the panel removed you should see the motor, this has a loom of wires from it to the window regulator check this connector is in good condition ie: clean connections, as said before the motor is running when you press button but maybe damaged inside & unable to operate the regulator.
