Hi All,

My ignition key snapped in the the ignition barrel, the steering isn't locked and I can't get the other half of the key out. Can anyone advise me on how to best go about getting the key out?

Thanks

take the cover off, undo the 4 bolts that hold the sterring column upright, then you should be able to unscrew the barrel from its position then you can go from there. You should be able to push a thin needle or something like that through to push it out.
Make sure the pins are pushed in though, its how lock pickingworks

These locks are quite difficult to pick unless you've done a few of them. Also the barrel does not unsecrew, you need to turn key to "march", hold in pawl on side of barrel, then barrel slips out. there is nowhere to put a needle in to push out the key.
Much easier to straighten a couple of barbed anglers hooks, then push them down the edges of key and withdraw key. The key must be in the off position to remove it.
Tony.

Thanks guys. There is a black button on the edge of the barrel, should this be in or out so that the key can be slid out?

The black button is to enable you to leave parking lights on and is nothing to do with the key. With the key in the off position, If you press the button and (if you were able to :)) turn the key anti clockwise, the side lights would stay on.

If you're a member of the AA, (or know someone who is ;)) they carry a small tool with a very coarse external thread for winding out broken keys.

Dave.

thanks Davren, saves me messing trying to pull the key out with it presed in and out. I'm going to give it another go today, can't begin to tell you how inconvinient this has been more so over a bank holiday.
