My 3 door 04 plate Punto has started to show signs of rusting on one of the rear wheelarches (at the front of it).

the Fiat dealer reckon that it's typical and not covered by the anti-perforation warranty.

Has anyone else's Punto of a similar age got this:mad:?

My 53 plate mk2b has no rust at all on the body work.

Fiats are galvanised so they shouldnt rust for many many years

Halmer, I was up at a breakers this week - all the Mk2`s are heavily galvanised - one car there had its door cut open near the lock (like a bent back sardine can) no paint remaining but no rust, not even on the cut edge of the metal. That in an exposed yard open to rain and dew and so on.
Some real body damage from accidents on these cars, twisted and torn body panels - no rust - despite no paint, just galvanised metal.

(I put a longer post than this on HJ site this morning to your thread there - but got timed out - message lost as seems typical with my posts there)

Open the rust bubbles and look for galvanising - if its not there it may have been accident damaged in transportation when new (in transit) or a production incident.
Or get an independant body shop to see if the galvanising is there.

Good luck (`oilrag` ;-)

The rust IS a common issue.

Why?

Because the rear arches are double skinned, over time the join between them allows water to get in. This then starts rusting the paint from underneath and bubbles will start to form. Unfortunately if the arches aren't kept clean correctly the moisture will get in, it's just a matter of time. My HGT had rear arch rust from the previous owner as a result of this - panel was re-painted and the skin was re-sealed.
