I currently own a 02 plate saxo vts, i have been searching on autotrader for a replacment and i like the look of the punto hgt, and the clio sport 172

a few questions for hgt owners

what is the 0 - 60
the bhp
top speed of these hgts,
and do you think honestly there will be a good imporvment over a saxo vts

cheers

127mph 8.3s Pfffffffffffft.

Actually i own one unlike WolfRacePunto and those are official Fiat figures he has quoted and Fiat are conservative with thier stats anyway.

In my experience it's more like 7.2 0-60 and thats easily done, just start fast but smooth in 1st change to 2nd and floor it to 6800 rpm and do a quick smooth change to third and floor it for the extra 1-2mph to reach 60.
and i've had 134mph so far (real speed)....couldn't do much more though really. And my car is bog-standard as well at the moment, defo getting a full stainless steel exhaust system and maybe a BMC - CDA kit soon though.

Seen one of these in the garage where i bought my car, took it for a test drive, nice car to drive and a nice kick out of it 2 pity about the engine size for a 22 year old to insure

nwmlargee buy the clio its much nicer and faster

lol I hope you're being sarcastic.....but saying that i've driven a 172 and done 0-60 in 6.2 secs and it tops out at around 144mph....it has a 2 litre engine after all so it is nicer and faster, but it costs alot more that an HGT and with a few quid spent the HGT can match it. If you can afford it michael_vts go ahead and buy that french piece of crap clio, but i'd get an HGT if i was you because it's just better value for money.

How did you get 6.2 0-60 in a 172? that's the same as a clio v6! 7 secs is more closer to the truth.

If I had the money I would go for a clio 182 cup. Theyre about £14k and have a 0.60 of about 6.5 secs, so you would blow away most hot hatches on the road
You would have to put up with smaller car build quality, but hey we drive fiats, so It's nothing new!*

*stilo/punto/bravo owners etc, don't start, Im joking.

That 6.2 in the clio 172 probably was closer to 7 secs actually ;) , it revs more eager than the HGT, the gearing on the HGT could have been made better, what i don't understand is why the sporting 1.2 has a 6 speed box and they put a 5 speed box in the HGT!?!?. Having driven my sisters 6 speed golf TDI 150 which has more or less the same 0-60 times as the HGT, the extra gear in the HGT could have made the ratios a tiny bit narrower plus more rapid progress and 6th could be made a bit longer so motorway cruising would be lower in the rev range. Oh well.

I don't know If it would have meant a quicker car having 6 gears, the 6 speed coupe "plus" is more or less the same to 60 compared to a 5 speed coop (like mine) , It just doesn't eat as much petrol on the motorway, which is nice!

the comment wasn't sarcastic i would rather have a 172 " afew quid spent on the hgt" would still leave it trailing trust me i got one and have spent a few quid

as sammi said the 182 is a far better option for not a lot more cash

6 speeder's not a very strong gearbox, it's a development of the Punto 55 / Cinquecento one which won't fit the 1.8, and I'm informed it can't handle more than about 120 brake.
Unless you like repairing it. Often.

Yeah i had a look on autotrader.co.uk actually you can get a clio 172 for just £2000 more than a same reg + mileage HGT, so michael_vts go get a clio 172 instead of a girly punto hgt that you have to hurt to get any performance out of!!. :p I'll have a look around for something else myself next spring i think, and it won't be another Punto or indeed another Fiat. I only got the HGT cos it was cheap for a 51 plate and had really low miles anyway. :)

Lucky you Pinin.

Just don't let the coop forum mob find out :D

I used to have an HGT and it's a great car - really nippy and fantastic down back roads.
I would expect the Clio to be the same but quicker - it has got 40BHP more and I think it's about the same weight.
Just make sure you get one that's not knackered or worn out coz like with most sporty cars the suspension is as important as the engine.

Everyone stop misconstrueing me! Im sticking with the coop. If I had any money for a new car, it would be for a 20vt LE or maybe a plus.

Just look at them:

You can pick up one of these for 7k now. 7k!!! You could have two for the same money as a shopping trolley clio :worship:

I robbed this pic from Hypermonkey on the Coop forum, so Cheers to him (y)

Hello fellow Fiat owners :) Take a leaf out of Sammi's book and get yourself a coop ;)
