I had my MOT done yesterday and when I picked the car up the guy asked me where I go for fuel. I said that I go to Morrisons, he said that I should use branded fuel like 'Shell' every now and again to keep the car in good shape in the longer run.

The emissions test failed and I think he said that the catalytic converter was a little plugged up. (It was sent away and was cleaned out).

Has anyone found this to be a problem in their car?

I go through a tank full of supermarket special every week without problem, but I have yet to get an MOT, although my car is old enough, I haven't had it long enough.

wot a load of crap - it all comes from the same place and wont make a difference whatsoever!

every other a good tank of shell is helpful for me and does better in every area (apart from it bein 1p dearer than my supermarket sh*te which i only use on the way home from brough cos it is as i go onto the a19 and the once i used morrisons it was sh*t burys was better lol) they may come from the same refineries but the supermakets choose the cheap **** based on price alone thats all (should know my dad used to work around Stanlow)

I fill mine up every week at Tesco, and if I need a tenners worth urgently, Morrisons usually (its next to my GFs).

I wont use Shell now because I had my card cloned in one of them, and all the stations around here have had bad reports of that.

Our 96 Punto 75 has been run on Tesco's unleaded for the past three years. Amazingly it has gone through the past three MOT's with absolutely nothing needing to be done. It's used as a runabout, so probably not the best loved example, but doesn't complain about supermarket fuel. Never heard of a cat being sent away to be cleaned. A good sensible "thrash" might do the trick, otherwise it's a replacement.

Been driving 20yrs about now a wide selection of cars mainly fill up in tessis and sainsburys, also been around on loads of car forums but never heard that before or had problems. I normally spend £500+ a month on fuel

Most supermarkets buy the crap fuel and chuck a shed load of addatives in it this is why they are usually cheaper. Tesco fuel is ok though as they use proper stuff purely because of there size :)

Would adding stuff not affect the octane rating of it?

i only use shell... the only time i use supermarket petrol is when i need it and there is no shell garage around... :)

:confused::confused::confused:

That's a new one.....

What did they charge to remove the manifold/cat assembly, lambda(s), "clean" it, and refit with new gaskets?

I don't know what they did.

Just got my recepit and it says that they cleaned the 'Oxygen Sensor', wherever that is:confused:

i use any petrol station apart from the one's where i know the petrol is full of crap (underground tanks ate slightly rusty and the crap gets mixed with the fuel)

I tend to only use Sainsbury's petrol only when i'm at my GF's and desperate, normally its shell vpower all the way as I get better mpg from it and it works out cheaper in the long run.

I also only fill up from warning light to brim, never top up a tenners worth or so, so I don't tend to mix different fuels, dunno whether this makes a difference........

Never had any issues with fuel in either my 55s or my mk2 1.2 8v:D (fingers crossed)

Think I'll try Shell V Power when I have to fill up again, I'll post on here how many mpg's and miles to a gallon I get.
