Hi

I know it is possible to add an ignition push button to my 02 Punto.

My question is would it be possible to have it so when I push the button the engine starts regardless of it the key is in the ignition barrel?

I understand the key would have to be present in the car to de-activate the immobilise.

I know it may not be easy but I would like to give it a shot!

Would the steering lock be a problem? Does it disable if the engine is running?

Thanks
Chris

Not a good idea to disable a foolproof antitheft device. It can be done of course, it involves taping a spare key or the transponder from it, close to the pickup antenna. Another way is to have the ecu re-coded to ignore the immo.
The steering lock needs the key in it to unlock, however you can remove key without locking the steering.
By the time you have done all this you might as well give the car away, rather than have it taken from you.

The little button on the ignition barrel is to enable you leave the parking lights switched on when you leave the car. Hold the button in whilst turning the key fully anti-clockwise then remove the key and the lights will stay on. Supprising the number of people I've met who've never discovered that.

Does that got for 1995 punto's? i never knew what that button was for

PS to the original Post, it wouldnt be a good idea to bypass the immobo and have a start button, if someone breakes the window and pushes the button there away.

Yea but the button also pushes in the wheel lock, dont think it locks wheel otherwise. Didn't know about the parking lights bit though.

The wheel can lock without that little button being pressed in.
Just turn engine off and remove key then try move wheel it will lock as soon as it has enough movement.

Id agree with a few others. Your best bet would be to wire it into the ignition circuit. That way start button would only work with the key in the acc on position.
The reason id think about is insurance. If it works without key it will invalidate your insurance as you are being negligent in not securing your car

Its also surprising how many people don't know about the "Follow Me Home" function. When you have parked and removed the key, you can pull your main beam stalk (as if you were flashing someone) and the headlights will come on for 30 seconds. I think this can be done 8 times so the lights stay on for 4 mins, helpfull if you are rummaging for the right key for the front door in the dark.

Back on topic I think this idea, although its different, is a bit daft. Its only an 02 reg punto, not some kind of supercar. Also it makes the car a lot easier to break into and drive off, if the transponder was taped in the car by the ignition barrel any1 could break in, hit the start button and drive away, all of a sudden you have an insurance nightmare.

You will still need the key to open and lock the doors and too stop the steering lock from coming on so you might aswell just use it for the ignition too.
