The tensioner has failed on my daughters Punto 55, the Haynes manual assumes you have a belt fitted, so positioning the crank/belt before removing the belt. This one's got the belt hanging off, any comments on re-timing the cam/crank?.

Thanks in advance.

For the crank you could "make" four of the tools FIAT use to determine when all pistons are at the same height by following the instructions in the Haynes manual about using old spark plugs and some rod.
The cam(s) will be a bit more awkward as the cam turns twice for every crank revolution.
On other cars there are timing marks on the cam sprockets and crank pulleys, I'm not sure about the Punto though.

there are timing marks on the belt, and all pulleys and iirc the oil pump cover.

check haynes re replacing the timing belt, ignore what it says where it assumes the belt hasnt snapped - when i took my engine to bits it wasnt at TDC

There is one mark on the cam pulley- a notch which will line up with a cutout on the head just below the cam cover.

There is also marks on the flywheel- remove the rubber cover from the top of the gearbox and you will see 0 5 10 on the gearbox edge and a line on the flywheel. Set to 0.

Thanks to all for the help. Who ever said 'about 1.5hrs' was spot on. I removed the cam cover to ensure both valves were closed on No 1, it's all very easy.
