Hi

My (Mark 1) punto has a problem with the rear wiper. It stopped working when I came back from holiday and is now sitting half-way across the screen (the blade is not stuck to the glass - I lifted it to check). The front wiper is fine....

Since there's no life at all when I switch it on (no sound etc) I thought that it would be worth checking the fuse before taking it to a mechanic.

The owners' handbook is very unhelpful(!). I did manage to find some fuses behind a panel near where the driver's right knee is but none is marked as a rear wiper fuse.

Is the relevant fuse elsewhere or shared by something else? If so which fuse should I check/maybe replace? Any suggestions/help greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

There are some fuses on the passanger side,in the glove-compartment.

Its probebly the rear whipermotor that have failed. It did it on my punto, stuck halfway. Its very easy to change, I took mine apart but I figured it wasnt worth 60£ to buy a new one. Here in sweden the breakers want 40£ for a used one, but from what I have seen its alot cheaper in UK.

Was the wiper working OK before it stopped working ie slowly??? My wife's rear wiper is seized. I freed it up a few weeks ago and it worked OK for a while, but now it's seized again! When you switch the rear wiper on and leave it for a few minutes, does the wiper motor get hot (you'll need to remove the hatchback trim to get access)? If the motor gets hot, the n it's seized.
You could just check each fuse to see if it's blown. Remember that there are fuses hidden in the glovebox as well.

One thing you should test is to open up the part of the whiper motor where the mechanic part is(not the motorpart). And see if its just something stuck in there. My fiat garage said sometimes you could fix it.

Thanks for your suggestions. Much appreciated!

I've only had the car a short while so I'm not sure how quick the wiper should be or what noise it ought to make. I suppose that it might be right that it was fairly slow. Also, it sounded at times like the motor was straining a bit.

This makes me now think that it's motor related and therefore expensive to fix! :(

I did look in the glove compartment but didn't see any fuses. Are they hidden behind a panel or something? To rpaterson - if I find that the motor is the same as your wife's (ie seized), will it need replacing or is there something that I can do to free it?

had to replace the motor on my punto a few months back, well it had needed replaced for over half a year but as you can't fail your mot for it didn't bother with it...
however g/f got insured for it and complained so i fixed it myself... straightforward to do, would take about half a hour to get it done, nothing really complicated with it at all, just follow the haynes manual if you don't want to go in blind or you could always take it to a garage...
fiat dealerships i contacted were wanting over 120quid to do it which included about 70quid for the part... i'd recommend using www.findapart.co.uk and fitting a second hand one yourself, costs about 40 to 50quid

If you remove the wiper motor, you'll see the "motor" part of it and the "spindle" part of it. I think that there is a cover that you can remove to let you see inside the body. The motor part of it is attached to the rest with four things that are kind of like claws. If you (carefully) bend the claws back, you'll be able to withdraw the motor from the rest of it.
Now that you've removed the motor part, you should be able to turn the spindle by hand. If you can't, then the spindle is seized (this is what was/is wrong in my case). Use plenty of WD40, leave it a wee while and then get some vice grips on the wiper end of the spindle and rotate it back an forward until it turns nice and easily.
I can't remember if you can completely strip it down in order to use some copper grease on the spindle. Either way, just re-assemble it and you shoudl be sorted.
Don't worry if you break it, you were going to need to buy a new one anyway!

Sorry if I am repeating what has alrady been said, but my motor went as well. Seems to be a common problem, and like everyone else it took me over a year to fix it!

it's really easy to replace, did mine a couple months ago. Got a second hand one from a local breakers yard, only cost £20. Better than paying a dealer £120 for 20 mins work.

Just to say thanks for your tips/help. I sorted it out this weekend. It was the rear wiper motor that had gone. I got a part from a breaker's yard for £25 and fitted it. (y)

The fiat garage wanted over £80 plus VAT for the part and another £75 plus VAT to fit it.... (n)

yeah i couldn't believe they wanted about 75quid to fit it when it must be a ten minute job when you know what you're doing.. i certainly fitted it in under half a hour... robbing gits!
