Hi, on Saturday my Punto Mk2 just started to judder while driving, actually even while I was stopped at the lights it was still juddering. The engine management light was flashing at times as well. I also have a separate problem as my airbag light is constantly on for some reason.

Can anyone recommend any good garages that would look at these faults in the London/Herts area or will only authorised Fiat repairers be able to help me? They charge £80 just to diagnose the problem. A few years back I had a similar issue and they charged me the £80 and then £400 on top, then about a month later the engine light came on again so I took it back there and they charged me another £80 to diagnose and then £350 on top. So I'd rather not go back to them if it's possible.

Would appreciate some advice regarding this.

Thanks

hi , the same thing has been happening to my punto elx ,engine juddering, engine light would sometimes come on and then when i restart the engine sometimes it would go off, took it to a nationwide garage this morning, they hooked it up for £50 and the propblem is the ECU, it was fried, basically it wasn't telling the fuel system to send enough fuel through or something like that, to have it done was another £365, i rang around for other quotes and there wasn't much difference so i went with nationwide, fingers crossed it will be done tomorrow, hope this helps you in someway, good luck.

For the sake of a cheap quick repair I would change my sparkplugs and leads and get a replacement coilpack from a scrappies and try substiting 1 at a time see if that stops the judder. If it does disconnect the battery for a few hours and see if the engine management fault indicator goes off.

May not work but wont cost you much to try.

Cheers guys, I was going to take it to this Fiat repairer called Motorsales near where I live but after doing a quick search on them through this site I've decided against it. Will take it on Wednesday to a different place, I have a feeling it is the ECU as I had a similar thing happen a few years ago, hope i'm wrong but the exact same thing is happening as it did then.

same thing happed to me the engine was miss firing took to to nationwide the AA mad said it was the coils had then changed £100 fitted, still miss firing nationwide said its the ECU £400 fitting that fixed the problem. But some the engine light comeson when i go over speed bumps lol any solutions?

Took it to a local garage and the engine was misfiring, total cost was £265. Picked it up yesterday and the car drives fine although the engine management light is still on, but before it started flashing at the weekend the light has been on constantly for 2 years anyway.

Should i take it back and ask them about it or is it nothing to worry about?

I has this problem with my Punto Active 8v just a few days ago.
I took the car to a garage owned by a friend of the family and he diagnosed the problem by hooking it to a computer. Turned out it was a fault in one of the cylinders, one wasn't firing.
I thought it was going to cost a fortune to get fixed but after sum mucking about with the cylinder he got it fixed without any new parts. So I would be wary of some dealers/garages charging a fortune for new parts when they are not needed. Also the £80 you were charged to diagnose the problem sounds rather expensive. I got it for £20 as he was a close family friend, but he told me it would usually be around £50.

Laura.

One of the cylinders not firing would indicate a fault somewhere else. The cylinder is merely a container, it cannot in and of itself cause a problem, or at least not one that can be rectified by tinkering.

Sounds like you had some kind of ignition fault due to dodgy wiring which your friend has fixed.

And £80 isn't unreasonable for running the diagnostic checks, if done at a Fiat garage. It's not cheap, and yes you could probably get it done for less, but it's roughly standard for Fiat garages.

Hi,

The same thing hapened to my car (MkI 55).
I took it to a FIAT garage who had no clue whatsoever and could not fix it but gave the car back after charging me £250, changed the tappets and had to repair the gear linkage because the car was juddering so much.

The problem was completely rectified by changing the coil packs.

Some people were telling me to check or change all the sensors or change the ECU but I am glad I did not.

For the sake of £70, go to a motorfactors get two coil packs and change them (or for about £40 go to a trusted local garage who will connect a handheld device to the car and it will indicate where the problem is coming from)

There are two coils sited on the right of the engine. Two HT leads from the engine go two each pack. Pull out the leads, undo the coil pack and remove. Put on new pack with the leads going back in the same order and the same to the other pack. This solved my problem and the mangement light has never come back on.

Hope this helps.

All Fiat garages I've been to charge £80 for diagnostic. But I took it to a local garage recommended by someone on hear in another thread and they charged me £50 diag and the problem seems to be resolved for a total of £265. Well the car is driving normal anyway, just wondering if I should take it back as the light is still on.

I kept this from a posting years ago
Not sure if it works but may be worth a try?

To reset the ecu on the mk1, bring the car up to temp so that the rad comes on and off twice.

disconnect the battery for 45secs and reconnect.

Start the car and do not touch the pedals for 5 mins, switch off the car and switch back on to drive away.

If the engine stalls repeat until it doesn't.

For the mk2, disconnect the battery for 1 hour, switch on, leave for 5 mins, and switch off without pressing a pedal. switch on again to drive away.
