Technical Starter motor problem

I recently broke down and had to call the AA to get me going and he said that i needed a new starter motor. I bought a new starter motor and tested it to make sure it worked. The motor worked and the solenoid worked. i fit it to the car and start the car, i can hear the motor spinning but the gear doesnt move along the shaft to start the fly wheel.

Any suggestions to what may be wrong? or what i can do to fix the problem?

On what car?

Can you hear the solenoid working now it's fitted to the car? Have you disturbed any wiring while fitting?

Its a 2001 fiat punto 1.2
havent disturbed any wires, that i know of. Alls i can hear is the motor spinning

Tried everything i can think of and suggestions ive read on the forum, been and bought a haynes this morning and everything ive done with the wiring is correct
just tried to start it again, and all the dash lights started flashing, and then went completely off and my clock restarted
