Hey guys & gals

Just a quick question, having past my test last Friday i am now buying a car. ive got £1500 and have been looking at lots of little hatchbacks.

Anything by vauxhall ive found to be uncomfortable to drive and my knee hangs over the gear stick.

I was 99% of buying a punto til i heard from various sources that they have a lot of problems.

My brother who has been selling used cars for over 25 years said they get alot of rust problems and can be alot more £ and hassle than other makes.

So I wanted to know if anyone else can back this up or tell me i this is wrong.

Im looking to get a 2000-2003.

So basically are Punto's decent reliable cars? or are the headaches regular and more hassle that they are worth?

thanks
alex

i have been looking at this model and have haggled the price down too.

car looks good, it's in great condition....(y)

punto's are not terribly unreliable cars, infact the only major prob is the HG going, other then that they only have the standard probs other cars have, and punto's are easy cars to repair and part are always available...

for a small car they are quick and very nippy. depends on what model you get... also as you said you have just passed your test and insurance and tax on the punto's are fairly good...(y) but it all depends on what your looking for in a car...

yeh man!! get a punto! there awsome! no less reliable than any other hatch (if at all a lil more reliable) ive tortured mine and keeps goin with no complaints, even the head gasket only took 2 hours and some elbow grease to fix!!
plus there awsome lil cars to drive, they got "life" if that makes sense, clio's and corsa's are just poo!
buy 1 u wont regret it, and if anything goes wrong, imo this is the best car forum out there....so u wont be stuck :D

EDIT: yeh that car looks neat, nice interior aswell!! haggle a bit, and itll be ure new toy!!!!!

it all really depends on who previously owes the current car in question, i could say look at a lambo, but will probs give you endless amount of headaches and more £ going out of your wallet because the previous owner didn't look after it.

Just need to shop round and see what individual car is good. don't assume a cars bad because someone slapped a bad comment on it.

I don't own a punto myself but the missus does, and its a very nice and reliable car. very good for a 1st car tbh, previous owner looked after it. no rust visable, FSH. and it was registersd in 1995-6 (don't quite know which one)

like i said they can be nice cars if they are looked after well enough...

ok well thanks for the feedback so far guys.

ive just turned down a silver astra 1.8 sri 2000 reg even though the insurance was only £400 more (£2200) than a punto would be, because they are horrible to drive and the driving position is extremely uncomfortable. I am going to view the gold punto ^^^ later tonight or tommorow morning.

so you got a quote at £1800 for a punto:eek:

how old are you?

my god...my 1st policy (a year ago on thursday) on my 18th bday was £1800
just renewed £1100
peeps, shop around!!! and try out the ff insurance...
also quinn, elephant, LV all good for new drivers!!!
tbh mk1 55s are dirt cheap to buy, last forever, easy to fix and cheap to insure.....
they r group 2
mine is 60s-team which is group 4 rather than the sx which is group 3....dnt no how that came about....
or are u specifically lookin at mk2's??

edit: and to think stilo 1.6 dynamic is only group 5......next years toy....

Alex - Congratulations !!!

There a good cheap little car, ideal for a first car....

Shop around for your insurance on all the comparison websites....

Dont go for a Vauxhall, they are S$%*. You know what I mean ;)

Dont buy the first one you see have a good shop around, and remember in these hard times car sales are scarce trade and private. A good time to Haggle

If youve got got £1500 to spend on the car look in the £1650 bracket and knock them down (y)

after great consideration i am buying a 1.6-2.0 litre focus.

the insurance is only £100 more on TPFT and the cars are cheaper than the puntos that ive seen.

so id be silly not to take the opportunity

I cant believe you guys are paying so much for your insurance, crazy. I went on my Dads insurance for two years, now im on my own TPFT paying about £600, and thats gonna drop loads cos im now 21.

Shop around people, no point paying more for you insurance than your car is worth

when i first passed i was paying 1150 for my 1.1 fezzy then when i got my felicia it stayed same til i got my one years thn it dropped to 650 but they knocked it up 50 cause of exuast....now i got the punto swapped insuance over again an going from third party to fully comp an i have to pay £178 next month before my dmassive drop in feb:D

over all im very happy with my punto and would def buy another (y)

I received a pre-renewal quote (in other words an email off confused.com) and they recon my present insurer should offer me a renewal at £653, I'm won't quite be 21 at the time of the new policy having held the license for just short of 3 years and 1 years NCB and pass plus, perhaps the Pass Plus and NCB are what is keeping peoples premiums so high? (that's on my Mk1 Punto 60S Team)

I was on my mums insurance for 2 years, then was payng £40 p/m on my Corsa.

Now I'm £37 p/m on the Punto, and thats with stuff like legal cover and free courtesy car added on.

could be a few people not telling us bout a few little "bonus" points ;) as iv been told points win prizes (y)
