Hi. I have a standard (engine wise) mk1 1999 3dr Punto 60 S Team manual. I was just wondering from anyone else with the same car how sensitive the low end is in 1st gear.

I ask because with mine its very twitchy, if in traffic its tough to get a smooth ride out of it. It seems worse when slowing down e.g. going along in 1st gear about 2000rpm, when I take my foot off the accellerator it thrown my head a lil forward.

Other people who have driven it notice it too, when setting off it is generally followed by wheelspin because its sensitive.

It is like it have a very light flywheel giving rapid acceration and de-accelleration (sp). I was wondering if there is any way adjusting the throttle response? Is there a running jet and an idle jet in the carb that can be adjusted for when they swap over or anything like that? Or are all Puntos like mine? Any help would be great and if you need more info ill do my best.

mine is somewhat a little bit sensitive
I've got a Mk2 1.2l 8v

If u ease off the throttle in 1st i do get a jolt as well
And it is fairly easy if ur giving the car a few (only a few!) extra beans ontake off often throws those front wheels around....

I've found as well - when steering to go round a corner and u put some power down it also throws the wheels into a spin....

So i think it must be a characteristic for been a low gear ratio?

yeah i sometimes wheel spin by accident when pulling out of t junctions turning if i put a bit more gas to stop it stalling. the gas and clutch in puntos is crap (mk2), now iv ehad a courtesy car ive realised what an awful drive the punto is, but you get used to it, and become a master of the gas

I like mine :)
The clutch is nice and soft and its hard to let it stall :)

I mean driving my bro's clio or mum Picasson the clutch's are VERy sharp...

Ziggy122 seems to of got the closest way of describing it. Like Ziggy says its like a jolt both accellerating and more frustratingly when slowing down when you are trying to be smooth and instead you get thrown around. I imagine from the outside it looks like the car is kangarooing but when slowing down rather then setting off.

Its not the clutch that I have a problem with though, all this happens in 1st (and 2nd but less) while cintinually moving but changing low end speeds if you get me.

Sorry its a hard thing to describe but by the sounds of it its just a characteristic of the engine/gearbox combination.

I have the exact same problem.

Lets say I'm turning right at a junction so put the accelerator down but may have pushed it down a bit too much so i lift off to let the car roll but instead of rolling smoothly it jolts about a few times, mostly happens in 1st and 2nd... accelerating or letting the car roll.

Mk1 Punto 98' 55s

I'll get my car serviced pretty soon see if that sorts it out.
