Hey guys! As you can see i'm new here.
So basically, the middle of october i passed my test. Got myself a 99 zetec 1.25, a day later my friend flipped it in the lanes and wrote it off. Was a lovely engine and i miss the power it gave. it cost £1100.
A week later, my friend paid up, and we went to see an 02 plate Punto Active 1.2 8v, 5 dr, gun metal grey. It was beautiful. 65k miles, immaculate condition.. i had to have it, and for £1350 it was a bargain.
So now a month down the line, after finding out im coming into some money soon, im looking into making it "my" punto. The engine is lovely, unless there're more than two people in the car including the driver.

I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to modding, so bare with me!
I'm not looking to spend much, but i've been looking into;

  • Alloys (15", 16" or 17"? What tyres?)
  • Lowering (By how much?)
  • Speaker system (What size speakers do i need for a full replacement? Do subs work well in this model?)
  • And are any body modifications worth it? I was thinking of getting some of the windows tinted, and if they make a huge difference then maybe an inconspicuous body kit, i dont want it looking like a chav racer!
So those are the things im definately looking into getting. I figured that all of that together will cost me around £500-£600, which i could afford by january.

Secondly, would any performance mods be worth it? The only ones i've been looking at is a full induction system and a full sports exhaust system. I need input on this because im not sure whether the price ill pay for the power will be worth it, as i've heard i'd only get about 65bhp? For close to £600 alone then that's not really worht it.

Things you need to know - I'm from Wales = Speed bumps, potholes, icy etc. And i don't want it to stick out, i just want it to look different.

I found this picture in another thread, i'm looking to make it look similar to this, maybe bigger alloys?;

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks guys.

I hate to say a decent set of alloys will cost you £500-600 on there own

And with bigger alloys you put more strain on the gearbox and diff, which tbh are not the strongest in the punto to begin with.

As for performance mods it aint really worth it in my oppinion, you can get a GSR kit and sport exhaust but the money you spend on the kit + the insurance hike when you declaire them isnt worth it. Save up and get a faster car to begin with.

Right. Well atm i've just got some ****ty caps on there, so the first thing i plan to do is get some alloys anyway, no matter how much they cost. So would you say a set of 16's? Or are they too big? Seeing as i want to lower the car aswell then the smaller ones might look bigger.

And that's fair enough, insurance is a bitch! What about for the exterior mods that i mentioned?

If it was a 3 door I'd definately say 17" with 35mm lowering, but since yours is a 5 door I'm guessin its a bit heavier - you might get some problems. So maybe 16" with a 35mm drop??

Awesome mate. Would that be 35mm on the front and rear?

Also, angeltuning. Are they worth it? What do they do?

Yeah 35mm front and rear, no reason really with the punto to have different heights front and rear.

If you look at Angel Tunings website it has lots of information on what they do. However i would say if you not really going to mod the engine much then getting a remap is not really going to have much effect

wheels;as you have a 5dr 16" wheels are the biggest as you'll have problems with rubbing on the rear arch, go for light weight wheels such as OZ's

tuning; induction kit, remap and supersprint backbox, after that it gets expensive for very small gains.

where in wales are you?

Will do, was looking at some OZ's in fact. I'm from Pontypool, near Newport/Cardiff.

So if I went with angeltuning for a remap, do you think they would do an induction kit and supersprint backbox for me? Around abouts what gain am I looking at for that?

i'm just down the road in cwmbran.

people have had poor results from angel remaps (including myself)
i think you should get around 10 -15 hp increase and an even bigger torque increase.
supersprint exhausts are quite quiet when driving normally but loud when you want it to be.
check to see if you have a center silencer, if so replace it with a straight section, this doesn't have to be supersprint

Man, small world! Where in Cwmbran? And is that your golden/bronze punto? She's nice;)

I see. Would that be from a full induction kit and like you said - backbox and maybe a straight section? Or does it include the remapping aswell. If so then that's actually more than i was expecting. I was thinking about taking it down to welsh coast customs on wednesday, and seeing what they can do for me. You had any experiences with them?

thornhill and yep thats mine

an ind kit would get you 3-6hp depending on which kit, don't get k & n
b/box about 3hp, you only need to get straight center if you have a center b/box
remap about 6hp, but do this after everything else

I had my front and center exhaust done at pro speed exhausts in cardiff

Ah good stuff mate, just came past thornhill on my way home from work - the new Bowlplex, you checked that out yet?:p

Well if i was to get an induction kit, it would probably be a GSR. Then again AngelTuning do sound quite promising. A friend of mine does all his own work to his Saxo VTR, and it looks very nice. Do you think I should buy the parts myself then work on them personally with him? He said he would help me out. Not sure on his abilities though!

First things first though.. Some decent ice, rims and lowering! Then performance in my next pay packet.

Cheers for all the help guys, greatly appreciated.

If you feel confident enought to do it yourself, even better with your mate there, then its always good to do work yourself: For one you save alot in labour costs, and two if you want to make it your own car its nice to think youve put the work in on it (y)

Plus if you get stuck, you always have this place to help you out

Cheers for all the help guys, greatly appreciated.

Mikeee, that car is what i plan to get mine to look like:D it's stunning.

Last question, are their any guides around or can you show me how to wire and install a subwoofer? I'm buying a set of speakers and a sub tomorrow, and will be fitting it myself. How do i go about wiring and installing into my mk2 5dr?

Excellent cheers mate. Seems a bit confusing for my liking - the sub that is lol. I'll try and get some friends together to help me out.
Cheers everyone.
