Hi, past few days I have gone to start the car and it is hesitant to start, it is as if the battery is flat, I have checked the battery with a multimeter and it's reading 12.9V+ and checked it with the car revving and it's 14.6v+. I disconnected the battery leads and they were a bit dirty so cleaned them and checked the earths and it seemed to be ok, however today it would not start at all, it sounds as if the battery is flat but is, as I said 12+, when I switched lights on to try it they did go dim and the voltage went down to 9.5v. Is the battery just tired or is there some other underlying problem? All help appreciated
Cheers

Im having a smilar problem with to starting slowly and when it doesn't start everything else is working fine. I have been told that mine sounds like a knackered starter motor so i fitting a new one over the weekend and will let you know if this stops the problem. :)

Hi. I've got something similar going on. Did this sort out the problem?
I couldn't find the earth connection which apparently runs to the gearbox. Did you find it on yours?

do u leave anything on for example fan heater or something just start with more simple stuff, the main thing to show a poor battery is the clock reseting all the time

mines got to the point where it drains over night and the clock resets so new battery for me it seems any one know a rough price on a new on and fitting?

Fitting is mega easy, don't pay someone else to do it!

Simply remove your battery wires (always negative off first, last on), then unbolt the chunk of metal holding it down to the battery tray, remove, place new battery then reapply the holding plate, bolt in place, connect the positive then the negative. All the bolts are 10mm.

I got a new battery for £20 2 and a bit years ago from a local motorfactors, not sure what FIAT want and Halfords is a joke (won't fit for a start). For reference I'm using a 44Ah battery that I got for my Metro but fits the Punto and works perfectly :D

Edit: J005h, do you have an aftermarket headunit? If so try disconnecting the leads at the back overnight for a few nights and see if it carries on, if it does then its new battery time (or more hunting to make sure a boot light isnt jammed on etc); if it stops you need a bit of a rewire!

had all the electrics checked first off and they are fine, haven't got round to fitting the new starter yet. Any1 sorted out there probs yet.

i have a after market HU and amp with sub but ive had them in the car for a year and its only in the last month the battery has been failing me so im guessin it wouldnt be the HU because its been fine for such a long time. i heard everytime the battery drains it loses half its capacity or somthing?

if i was to buy a battery im guessin it would need charging before i fit it?

just thinking it would make sense as if its sitting on a shelf in a shop for a while it wouldnt keep its charge, maybe they charge it once you buy it ill have to ask. thanks

It's hard to stop the chemical reaction happening, they would have to purposely flatten the battery, it all depends on the batterys composition and I can't recall the characteristics for Lead-Acid

usually just connect up and go. Take it on a little run down the motorway or something just to make sure its charged ok and your away.

They don't have batteries charged sitting on the shelf, the batteries are empty, what I mean is there is no acid /water mix in them. When you buy a battery they add the mix then give it a boost charge to bring it up operating voltage. The batteries are not like torch or smoke alarm batteries which come prechaged and can go off after a period of time. Also the torch or smoke alarm batteries need to be cleaned first as their connections are coated to prevent corrosion, if the coating is not removed you may not get a connection.

just bought a new one £49.95 and they fitted it for me, sweet as a nut

Does anybody know for sure if a Mark 2 Punto 8v X reg 2000 uses an "02" battery or an"063" ? I was sold an 063 this morning - not been able to put it on yet as my son has the car, but according to a couple of battery sellers on ebay, for a 1999 onwards it should be an 02, which looks a bit smaller and squarer. Anybody out there know? If it's wrong I want to change it before the place shuts!
Thanks.
