Hiya, I'm newbie, know nowt about cars :D, just here for a waffle-on, having bought a Y reg 1.2 yesterday so my beloved can tootle to work and not nick my car.

I've being trying to find out the cost of a new key (only got the one blue key for - and a small boy who likes to bin them if we're not quick enough -so really need a spare for if the worst happens)

I'm in Cambridgeshire, and have tried two dealers already - rapidly reaching the conclusion that its going to cost me an arm and a leg (well, mebbe a couple of pinkies)

The key is £99.36 (both dealers agreed on that) then theres the cost of the code card and coding. The first told me £33.40 total, the second £11.34 for the card and £38 for the coding itself. This is plus vat. So we're talking about £155 or £175 for a new key. Blimey.

Then I quickly asked (2nd dealer) about a service - I don't have a service history and its done about 45k. £185!!! So local garage it is for that then.

Blimey these car things are expensive arent they?? Anyone found any cheaper prices than that? I'm guessing that the cost of the key is not going to change, since they look that up centrally, but could I get the coding cost down?

you can get keys off ebay then you just take it to a key cutting place to get it cut. dont know about the coding thing but at least the cost of the key will come right down!!

Hi mate, and WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!

If you have a Mk2 then you have the Code2 key system. This means that your only real option is a dealer. Both dealers are tacking the mick with the quote of £175. They should be around £75 each for a code2 non RCL key which is programmed to the car including code card. The programming itself will take less than half an hour and most will normally do it for you when you go to pick up the key.

If you have a RCL code2 key then they are around £100 each. (again including coding and code card)

Hope that helps,
Alan

thanks for the responses folks.

Alan I dont really know what to do if what you're saying is correct. Would seem they're ripping me off, but I'm having trouble finding dealers in the area (all the info online seems out of date!)

Have browsed the forum and pretty sure I have what you say (mk2 code2 - I currently have one blue key instead of two) but not sure what RCL is? I'm guessing remote control...er...locking? In which case yes it is RCL.

I guess I need to look further afield for a dealer, mebbe find one oop north to coincide with a trip to the parents?! Its not worth a huge trek, but I hate the idea of being ripped off just because I'm a numpty when it comes to these things.

BTW I just rang my local garage - he looked up the price to service the Punto and came up with..£160 before tax. ARRRGHHH!!!

yes RCL is remote central locking, what are they quoting those prices on for a service (ie what they are going to do)??

Also yeah the visit parents and get a key cut there if cheaper is definately worth investigating (y)
Hi 5abr3 - well they both said that the 48k service is a 'full' service. and nope I dont know what that means <exactly> as I am car dufus!

Currently in talks with lovely lady from SGPetch in Darlington (nr parents - 200 miles from me!) who doesnt seem to know if I have a 'standard' key fob (if not I can't have it coded), but kindly told me to email her a photo so they can have a look.
She told me to try not to pass out when she's got me a quote for a new key, so she's nothing if not honest. Am waiting for that call...

If you are in the North East area try GMD in Pity Me, Durham. They are Fiat dealers are usually quite helpful. we too need a spare key for our Punto as some one lost one.....! It wernt me! I have so far been too scared to ring them for a price but I was thinking they would be around the £100 mark.

I might give them a ring too. Will wait and see what Darlo lady comes up with. I'm not overly optimistic at this point. Starting to think that it wasnt quite such a bargain!!

yeah i have a blue key too mate on my mk2, only came with one, i was quoted £80 for it, dont pay anymore than £100, but really its value for money, hmm £100 for a new key or £700 to change all the locks when we inevitably lose our keys eh :p

you're right - thats why we need one, especially with our light fingered toddler about, but blimey its a wrench parting with that much money for a piddly little key

yeah i keep putting it off, but i know i have to especially as i know if i buy one i wont lose it, and if i dont buy one i definitely will lose it ;) knowing my luck (the other day i left my car in gear and it ran me over and crashed into a mans house) i will lose it for sure and the liklihood only increases the more i delay lol :p

Re: The [massive] cost of a new key !!! More help needed :)

Hi mate,

Thats a standard Code 2 punto key. Its not a RCL key. It looks like you have aftermarket RCL.

Re: The [massive] cost of a new key !!! More help needed :)

oh go on, explain to the newbie what that means :)
So the key is bog standard, but someone added an RCL fob afterwards? It was somehow coded to match the car gubbins (v. technical me!)
What does that mean in terms of getting a spare key cut. I can get a key, but getting a new fob RCL coded might not be an option?

ok, so I've been doing a search on the site, and I kind of understand now what an aftermarket RCL means.
I'm thinking what it means is I can get a spare key from fiat, but as far as RCL goes, I'm stuck with the one fob we have?

Re: The [massive] cost of a new key !!! More help needed :)

Yeh thats pretty much it, all you will get from fiat is the key, If you can find out who makes your aftermarket kit you can probabily contact them and ask if they sell the fobs, (you usually code them to the car yourself by turning ignition on and pressing a series of buttons, waiting for x ammount of flashes etc. . . . it varies) but it should be in the kits instruction manual (if you got one, if not ask the manufacturer for one of those too)

Worse case senario thought if you loose the fob you will have to remove/disable the kit and you will still be able to use the car using the key to open the doors
