Hi

I have a Punto mk2b 1.2 16V Active Sport and i basically wanna get a few suggestions on what i could possibly do next?

I ain't been on the road long so obviously i can't just go out and insure a faster car straight away... i've noticed some people say that to anyone who hasn't got an entirely quick car lol.... its not that simple when you can't afford the insurance on a Punto GT or a Coupe 2.0 20V Turbo like some people suggest....
Hmmm besides i enjoy making changes to my car, i enjoy tinkering with the engine.

I enjoy playing around with the engine and have a bit of experience working with engines in the automotive industry as i have spent a few years now working for Jaguar in the engine build workshop.

I have a new exhaust system from manifold-back and induction kit.
I can't seem to find any more decent modifications for my car that will increase its performance a bit.

I'm just looking for any ideas that anyone has done to theirs or anyone who knows what can be done to my car to increase power and torque. What could i do next?

:)

i have £800 and increasing. Willing to save up. :)

Any ideas would be great.

Thanks,
Bugsy

If you fancy a challenge...https://www.fiatforum.com/punto/89930-punto-supercharged.html

Theres also a turbo'd version of your car running but can't find the thread right now. If you done induction and exhaust and don't want to go forced induction, well your left with cams, port polishing e.t.c. but a lot of work for not huge gains.

Having said that insurance will be equivalent if not worse than buying something fast.

Hmmm sounds like a good little challenge but i will have a think about it and weigh up whether it will be worth it or not.

Thanks for the advise!

Very much appretiated!

Thanks,

Yeah i do, you are right Tris Harris, but i can't seem to find any parts for my car online or anywhere else, i dunno i might not be looking hard enough but i was just looking for some advise on where to find stuff maybe thats all...:)

I aint exactly had my Punto for too long so i aint completely clued up on them to be honest. I had an old Fiesta before i changed to the Punto which i was able to play around with and change over Throttle Body, Cams Etc... from a higher spec version of the same car. (Zetec S).
I was basically wondering if its a similar sort of situation with Fiats, where you could perhaps use parts from another/same model with higher specifications.
Another example is one of my mates had a Zetec Fiesta and he did a straight engine swap for a 1.7 Puma Lump and he didn't have any problems at all.... thing was a considerable amount quicker afterwards...... but then he stacked it into a tree :( gutted!

but yeah, is it possible to do an engine swap to something a bit bigger as easily as you can with other cars like the Fiesta - Puma swap, or would there be loads of work involved...
Something that someone suggested to me was a 20V Coupe engine or something but i wasn't sure if that would fit into a mk2b Punto bay...? Surely it would need a bit of hefty work to squeeze something that size into a Punto?? Or would it be fairly simple?

Like i say, i don't know much about Punto's or Fiats at the moment.... but i'm learning :D

Thanks guys, absorbing like a sponge here... lol.

What induction kit do you have? Only one worth having is a GSR kit tbh as they give proven gains.

coupe 16v engines are one of the more common lumps to get put in but they are heavy and will kill the puntos handling. You also say insurance is a problem so i dont see how engine transplant or major tuning is a viable option?

There are a couple of 20vts that have been stuck in puntos but it isnt easy, cheap or straight forward.

ah right, yeah i thought about the whole weight issue too lol.

Yeah i spose, you have got a good point there, it wouldn't really turn out any cheaper on insurance i guess.
Although this was only a search for possible ideas for future, i think its great how i have got quite a few responses already, really appretiate the help. Thanks...

Hmmm i'm so gutted i'm not a bit older sometimes lol....bloody insurance.

Might just save the £££ and wait til i have a few more years NC under my belt lol.

and now working back at Whitley, have been at Gaydon til just recently tho. Not in the Engine build now anymore, was working there til about 4/5months ago, then got moved departments. :)

Why, You work for Jag too?:)

Thanks for the Advise guys.

Yeah, ive been in a Pumesta and they are pretty quick, especially when it's up to Ford racing puma spec :slayer:

if you look on: http://www.gsrengineering.com/engineering/pages/productsbycar/fiat/fiat.html

these guys know their stuff, and do cams and ported and flowed heads etc.

the owner is a member on here called Oldschool, and everyone swears by his abilities

Yeah they are quick, shame he managed to crash his after about a week...

And that was so weird mate, i was literally just looking at his stuff on the internet right now, then looked on here and you suggested it too haha, i might try get in contact with him.

Owww i don't know whether to save the £££ and wait or to just go ahead with doing some more stuff while i have the money.... i hate indecisive times like these haha.

Hmmm these GSR Induction Kits sound like fun.... do they seriously increase performance like they claim to on the website.
Is it really worth the money? :)

might be worth changing my K&N for one of these maybe??

Thanks mate,

Bugsy

a K&N induction kit will be losing you power on the Punto engine as it's really badly situated. If you go to a rolling road day with the Forum (see events section) they will put your car on a RR before and after to prove the gains to you.

Yeah so i heard, which kinda sucks cuz it was after i bought the K&N that i noticed that they weren't getting a very good reputation on punto's.:(
Surely it depends on where you have the filter placed within the bay tho.
If it is where it can get a direct cold feed does that not mean it would be performing the best...

Just out of interest then:
  • why is K&N so bad?
  • what is the difference between a K&N and a GSR?
  • what is it that makes the GSR give you a better performance increase and perform alot better than any other brand?
:)
Thanks,

Been a tech at Jag since i left school. Now warranty assessing Jag/Aston/LR

Just out of interest then:
  • why is K&N so bad?
The Filter is positioned in a very bad area in the engine bay. iirc it goes over the top of the engine, and sits over the hot engine manifold which means it sucks in hot air. and hot air = no power. the colder the air, the denser it is, the bigger the bang you get.
  • what is the difference between a K&N and a GSR?
GSR have researched the best place to put the filter, they found the coldest place in the engine bay and designed the one piece silicone tubing so that it is an optimum size and delivers the air correctly.
  • what is it that makes the GSR give you a better performance increase and perform alot better than any other brand?
FYI, it isn't the filter that is rubbish with K&N kits, they are actually very good filters! They just position them incorrectly. K&N do not research where the coldest part of the engine is for every car, they just design it so that it fits under the bonnet. Some cars see very good gains from K&N kits such as the Fiesta ST and BMW M5.

Well, thanks! :)

i knew that K&N wasn't exactly the greatest in positioning, i thought that when i was fitting mine... looking at it and thinking, well thats a stupid place to put it really cuz like you say its just above the manifold.... i have re-position it to a lower and more frontal point in the bay so hopefully i should be gaining something from it now.... we'll see!

Thanks for all the helpful info.

:)
