Hi.

I got my first car a few months ago T reg Punto 1.2 60sx

As from the thread title some git(s) broke into it probably by screwdrivering the ds lock. The key still works in the lock and locks the car ok.

When they broke into the car they removed the panels under the steering column and pulled off the igniton barrel. They must have given up after realising they cant start the car without the immobiliser shut off.

I have no igniton barrel there now because it was no-where to be found when I found the car like that, the top part of the switch is there and so is the sensor so i can still start and run the car fine by holding the key to the sensor and turning the top metal part of the switch, im guessing thats where the barrel slots into.
Im now getting to the point where its annoying me that I cant put the key in the ignition and have no idea how this will affect my next MOT.

I still have my red key and my 2 blue keys which came with my car.

All I really need is a new igniton barrel and possibly some surrounding parts as ive not seen others before so i dont know if anything else is needed.

Im trying to figue out which way will be my cheapest, i dont mind if I have one key for my ds lock and one for my igniton. Im figuring from reading the sticky on this topic that my best way to go is to get another barrel and new key for said barrel then use the programming method using my red key to get the new key's code to be added to my approved key list and accepted by my ECU.

Any thoughts on this idea, or any better ones. I could spend up to £100 getting it done but would rather not spend that much if I can help it.

ps: after it happened i noticed that if i turned the ignition switch back as far as it would go, like i would with the key then my front lights would come on, if I put it forward one position they would go back off again, regardless of whether on not I had turned the lights on/off myself. Im guessing its not supposed to go back that far to positon -1, because if I put it to the next one then I can lock the steering, just trying to check this out I dont want to fit a new barrel then have the lights come on when I take the key out.

The lights is just the function to leave your sidelights on if you are parked in the dark on a road that requires them to be on (speed limit 40mph + if i remembeer correctly), every fiat ive been in does this. There is usually a little button on the igniton barell to allow you to turn the key back further than you would normally.

Always wondered where that was, seems the fix on the posters car has removed the stopper on the barrel then.

oh good, thats one good thing then, cheers mate. It least I know im not gonna have to get a spark to look at it aswel, im already having to get an alternator for it aswel, I drove though a big puddle about 3 weeks ago when there was some heavy rain. Water must have got on the casing of the alt cos there is a big crack down it. Been making a racket ever scince.
All I need to do now is figue out what im going to do about the ignition.

Get a barrel from a scrapyard, take it to a locksmith and ask him to change it to work with your existing keys. This will be the cheapest way.

The 2 cheapest and easiest options: swap the tumblers from a scrap ignition barrel with your own or file down the tumblers of a scrap barrel.

Since you dont have your original ignition barrel, id just file down the tumblers of a scrap barrel. It will mean that more keys will operate the ignition, but tbh, even if the key fits, the car wont start if its not the right code... i.e. if its not your key in the ignition, its not going anywhere.

All you need to do is get an ignition barrel from a scrappies. Since you cant remove the barrel from its housing without a key (and i presume you'll need the housing aswell) you'll have to buy one with the key. Then remove the barrel from the housing by turning the key and pressing in the small metal catch on the side. disassemble the lock and then stick your key in the lock - some of the tumblers will be protuding meaning the lock wont turn, so file down the tumblers until there all flush and reassemble it all and put it on the car.

Thanks for all the help guys, ive been reading up the forum and been coming to similar ideas, I had the chance to try my key in a workmates car last night to see if it would move his, I decided against it incase I jammed it, would end up knackering up his aswell.
Need to try and get to a scrappy on one of my days off, plus if I get a lock off the same set for the barrel I can use the key that come with it with the ds lock, 2 birds with one stone, well I can only hope.

Remember that the ID tag inside the key is also checked by the ECU, you either need to grab all the locks and the ECU off the donor or fiddle the barrels to accept your keys, unless I have mis-understood what you have written!

oh hell no, if its not going to affect the MOT id leave it the hell alone and live with it the way it is, I looked into doing that right after it happened and thought no way am I paying that much for it. If I had to do anything like that Id at worst just leave the sensor hanging loose if possible, or put a disconnected sensor in with a new barrel and new key so that it will fit together properly. End up having 2 keys just to get the car started - id rather do that than go scouring around and getting the ECU changed

yes double post flaming begin, I know but it warrants a new post.

good news, I got the car repaired, a guys dad at work got a mechanic to do all the work for me. The ignition is done, alternator, even put new steering column covers on when he finished the ignition which was nice.

I've not spoken directly to the mechanic so I dont know specificlly what he has done to sort the ignition but I will get hold of him. It works.

When I put it in I had my red and 2 blues all originals and registered to the immobiliser, now I didn't have a barrel before now I do. I think he has taken another barrel and matching red key to fit it and swapped round the bits from inside the red fob so I have my master code in my main key. I also still have a blue key to work everything else doors and such. So from my logic I dont think that he has touched the box under the dash or under the bonnet, which I didnt want messed with anyway, also job woulda been too cheap for them to get changed. So my conclusion seems the most pluasable.

Now what I want to do is make a spare set cos now I only have one set. Im thinking that scince I have all my origonal boxes in the car and my red key which can go in the ignition and a blue key which should still operate the immobiliser but not the barrel. I've seen various threads on here about cloning keys, im wondering, does anyone know if it would be possible for a key cutter to make a key for me which has the same bottom as my red key to turn ignition but has a cloned top part copied from the blue key.
That way im not running it with the red key all the time, plus it means i can just get a £5 copy of the blue made just to use for the doors. That way if I do lose my new set I could have more made by keeping my current red and blue aside. Am I making sense? Anyone got any idea if this scenario would work? any input appreciated.
