(T) Completely New, completely rubbish on cars-need Punto help!

Hi all, sorry i am the most untechnical person in the world when it comes to cars so please bear with me!

Have a fiat punto, R reg and the exhaust has been making a funny noice for a while now. Think it has a hole in it. A couple of weeks ago, I found it hanging down near the floor, got a friend to clip it up (couldn't even do that myself-God I 'm rubbish!) and driving home on the A40 today, it came right down. Think it has cracked or something. Anyway, what i would like to know please is how much roughly this will cost to fix? I am scared that as an "intelligent about lots of things but not about cars" lady, I am going to get ripped off Any advice please?

hola amanda, are you at the london end of the a40? just thinking of garages that side you can pop into.

if not, get some grubby clothes on, and get under you car, have a good root around teh exhaust, be ayt one with it, obviously when it is cold, or you'll burn your hand off...use a torch have a good look, see anything obvious, then try with it running, no hands, but listen in, really loud under where you sit?

I do indeed Jai, Ealing! Concerned about the "burning hand off bit" but might try and have root around as you call it at the weekend! What about KwiK fit-do they rip you off? How much do you reckon I would get charged, just roughly say for the back part of the exhaust? (see? I know they come in parts!!)

good god no, you talking about w13 kwikfit, just down from sainsburys? run like hell from there, to w7, grays, yes they all look like convicts in there, but...they are good on price, and will have a good look without bull****iing you, you can decide for yourself then

I know Grays! And yes, they are rather scary there! I shall venture there as you have recommended me and see what they say... thanks so much for that!

As a guide, the rear section - online costs between £30 and £60. Fitting shouldn't cost that much depending on if any brake pipes or cables need to be moved.

my local exhaust fitter replaced the middle pipe on my girlfriend's punto yesterday. its the pipe with the flexi-joint and middle box, the largest part of the exhaust. it cost £48 fitted with a 5 year guarantee.

i had to leave work to rescure her when it snapped and was draggin on the floor. free skive

the problem began a few weeks ago when she parked on our lawn; smashing the exhaust on a concrete lip next to the path.

it old her not to do it, but what would i know.
