Hi,


I was just wondering why my engine is making a rattling/ knocking noise when idling/ ticking over with no revs
I had the cambelt, Head gasket and oil service a few hundred miles ago

Please can you help, as it is making a similiar noise to before the head gasket went...

Oops forgot to mention the car is an 8 valve 1.2 litre MK2 2000 year old Punto

are you sure it the enging as mine makes that noise and its because my dad took a speed bump to fast and now the back box on the exhaust moves now. one of the rubbers has shiffted and one of my mates tired telling my engin was recked.

No dont think its exhaust... when i lean on the black box on top of engine it kinda quietens down... but my car is in my garage at the moment and the sound may just be echoeing and making it sound worse as it didnt sound as if it was rattling last weekend

engine mounts on tight? (i say that as one would of been removed todo the cambelt) and are the mounts in good condition. Try rocking the engine when its off and see how much it moves

Does the engine stop rattaling once its warmed up nicely?

As most engine when there is a rattle/tappet upon idle on startup its some valve which is NOT adjusting properly.... once warm the oils moves around to this tappet and lubes it up - problem gone

It could be the need for a new Oil fitler and oil change
