Hello! Ever since I've owned my punto Mk2 there hasn't been a hand brake warning light which once in a while catches me out!

I have checked all of the fuses and they are all fine.

I looked under the handbrake cover where the contact is - and there is just a pink wire connected with a spade connector to the hand brake, but it has been cut off! (i.e. just a spade connector with about 4 inches of wire sticking out and not connected to anything!_

Does anyone have an idea where this is supposed to be connected to? As I'd like it to work - possibly selling soon! I can't seem to find the other end of the wire (as I dont know where to look for it!)

All help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi mate,

It should be connected to a small switch towards the rear of the handbrake lever. This controls the light on the dash board.

Hope that helps,
Alan

Thanks alan - BUT the spade connector is connected to the hand brake switch - its the other end of the wire thats missing - i.e. the part of the wire that would connect it to the dash! Does that make sence?

So i have a spade connector on the handbrake switch with about 4 inches of wire coming out and not connected to anything at all, with no signs of where it should be connected to!

Cheers.

Ahhhhhh.... yes i'm with you!! Well there are two (well three really) possibilities. One is that the switch was faulty, and someone who couldn't be bothered to spend £2 has just cut the wire. The remaiing bit of wire may be tucked under the carpet (hopefully) so if you remove the trim around the handbreak and gearstick you may be able to locate it that way! The second option is that somone has (very badly) installed an in car DVD player requiring a "handbreak" input, and has rather stupidly cut the wire and run it towards the rear of the head unit. (not that this would have worked anyway) So i would also check behind there if it cant be found in the carpet. Third option, is that its been cut closer to the BCU. In which case it could get quite tricky to trace it back etc, but is possible. Hopefully it will be one of the first 2!

Hope that helps,
Alan

Cheers alan I will look first thing tomorrow. I was a bit cautious about removing all of the plastic covers around the gear stick etc becuase they look like they'd be prone to damage and easy to snap (leaving me with no covers!) but I will try looking for it! I presume just a case of connect it back together if I find the wire!

Great help, thanks a lot! Mike.

just to let you know - no signs of the wire - took all of the gear+handbrake trim off and theres just the black connector connected to the bottom of the handbrake with about an inch of pink/black wire petruding from it! There is a large wiring loom looking as though its heading from passenger side to drivers side more towards the front than the hand brake, but no loose / broken wires in that, they are all nicely wrapped up!
