I have an intermittent problem with my dashboard when driving. There is no set pattern but often one or all of the warning lights suddenly come on which results in either loss of power steering, loss of abs, loss of power (or all) for 2 - 5 seconds then the lights die out and speed dials etc start working again and the car is fine. This problem seems to becoming a more regular occurance. The only light that stays on is the keycode light, but this disappears if the ignition is turned off and the engine restarted. I have had an auto electrician check both the ecu and body computer and no error codes were found. He also checked the wiring in the steering column and couldnt find any obvious problems.

I also have a problem with my puto stalling or cutting out. This is normally when I am stationnary in traffic or when I first get into my car and have to reverse when setting off. I then restart the car and it is fine.

Does anyone have any ideas of what is causing these problems and how to solve them?

Any ideas would be great!

The Earth Wire
This is a common problem that they become corroded and cause no earthing to occour, as a result you get problems like the above
Loss of everything....
As i understand its located underneath the battery tray on the passengers side on the strut :)
(read somewhere its a Air box off - battery out - battery tray off and headlight out
And its a 10mm nut

Clean that connector and bodywork around it and see if that makes a difference :)

Hello,

Re the intermittent dash.....
Yes as above, its a multi earth point. 10mm nut at the top. Make sure you also take the plastic cap off the top revealing multiple spades and female connectors. Give these a good clean and spray with WD40 or similar and clean up the metal mounting bracket and where it attaches to the chassis leg.

With regards to the stalling, does it idle normally the rest of the time? Or does it hunt slightly?

Hope that help's

Thanks for that, I ll check the earth point, in regards to the stalling it idles normally and just dies either when reversing after starting it up or sometime when stationery in traffic.

Hi

I know this thread is old and may be considered closed, but did you ever find the fault for this issue? My 54 plate Punto 1.2 8v is showing the same issues and it has cut out numerous times, occasionally not starting again. I've had 4 garages look at it and all said to get the body control unit changed which I have done (at a cost of over £650) but the car is still having the same issues.

Going back to the garage today to complain but wondered if you ever managed to get yours fixed?

Thanks.
Andrew

Well i own the same 1.2 8v punto and it cuts out when drivin at slow speed or when slowing to turn also surges the revs and then they drop out try alsorts any 1 help :)

again - see post 2
there is abig Multi point earth just near the battery tray and the main chassis earthing point

Get them both Cleaned up and get back to us

Also look for air leaks into the inlet manifold (split breathers, servo take-off, etc) as they can make the revs surge.

If a jump lead connected to the engine block and battery -ve cure the problem, you know its the earth.

Update:

I actually had all the earth points checked a while ago but forgot to mention it above. This seemed to stop the problem happening regularly but eventually it came back on a daily basis.

After having the Body Control Unit fitted (at a cost of over £650) and the problem still persisting I took it back to the garage and told them to keep it for a week and to drive it around a lot. They did this for three days and the damned thing wouldn't fault. On the fourth day it cut out for them whilst they were reversing it and so they then came to the conclusion that there was a faulty wire or something (which I thought was pretty obvious). After that they could get it to fault six out of ten times when reversing. They took the steering rack covers off and there was no obvious issue with trapped or loose wires. They also unplugged all the connectors and reseated them and since then the problem hasn't occurred.

This was a week ago and so I'm hoping that something they did has fixed it.
