Hey guys I am planning to do some unusual mods to my mk1 punto dashboard over the coming weeks and I would like your opinions on them and any implications you think may be present. I have just completed my first dashboard mod which was integrating my sat nav into the dash. Basically I was sick and tired of having to stick my sat nav on my windscreen every time I start a journey and the hassle of taking it off and wiping marks of the windscreen etc to prevent theft everytime I park. So I basically cut a rectangle the size of its screen in my dash (just to the left of the steering wheel) and custom built a rack to hold it into place behind the dash. Now its just a screen in the dash (cant even tell it’s a sat nav unless its on), it saves me the hassle of setting it up all the time and prevents theft as nobody can tell it’s a sat nav and it cant be nicked unless they have a spanner or a ratchet handy lol. And due to the hollowness of the mk1 punto’s dash it still picks up a signal! Result!
My next mod is something much more unique and is actually quite pointless, not to mention a complete waste of money. I plan to basically take the dials out and replace them with a 7 inch dvd monitor (£80) and then connect the monitor to a mini camera (£70) which will be filming the dials in their new location (which will be in a box in the boot or passengers side of dash). Like I said before this will only waist my time, effort and money. It wont be easy. I will need to extend all the wires connecting to the dial unit and make a mould/mount for the monitor and surroundings to fill in the gap of where the unit would have been. But the advantages are uniqueness and just an updated feel when driving the car. All your opinions are appreciated, please comment.

your right it is pointless and a waste, but please got for it (y) would be intresting to see.

I think it would be ace to have a 7" screen, but heres the thing can you change from showing the dials to been used as a DVD player? that would make abit more sense. What dials would you need to show btw? I would love to have my satnav intergrated into the dashboard.

Ritchie, it's your car so it's your choice. You appreciate that it'll be pointless, but if you have the inclination/time/money/ability then go for it.

Sounds like a sweet idea to me (y)
I remember seein tht done to something in a fastcar few years ago, he had the dials hidden in a black box in his boot and had a monitor in dash :D
Go for it!

just why??? and where the hell did u get this idea from ???? is it even legal??

yh it is pointless but its unique and thats the type of mods i do to my car. I work at halfords but im not your typical ripspeed barryboy. Yes most employees that own cars are but you do get a few people who have actually done stuff to their cars that make you think wow. Not many, but a few. As for the idea, my friend (and fellow halfords employee) has done it to his bmw 318. its passed an mot with it in and it is legal as its not a distracting dvd your be looking at, its the dials, which imho should be looked at anyway.

and in response to the comments regarding using the monitor for a dvd player, i'm doing that anyway but didnt post it on here because its not unique. Appreciate all your comments. Im not offended by any comment, i can see that it is a crazy waste of time, effort and money but i specialize in making my car special

thannks for informing me of where you got this crazy idea but i still do not understand why, but everyones to there own on what they want to do

Would be more interesting if you built a carputer into the car, put the screen in place of where the dials would be and intalled some software into it to display info such as speed, engine revs and so on. Could also get some satnav software for it.
Or create some kind of HUD by mounting the screen so it reflects in the windscreen.
