on my mk1 punto the passenger side rear door handle is broke (the exterior one) so obviously i need a new one. how do you replace them as i might go and get one from a scrappy tomorrow. also would the handles of a 3dr fit a 5dr?

Dunno about the 3dr/5dr question, but the handles aren't too bad to change. You have to take off the door card on the inside. There are three Hex key bolts if i remember rightly (2 of which you can see, and one is behind a cover at the top of the arm rest thing) and a screw holding the interior door handle on. If you dont have elctric windows, there is also a clip holding the window winder handle on that you have to prise off. Thats a bit tricky, but you get there eventually.

Once the door card is off, you have to ease the rod off of the door andle working inside the door, then unbolt the door handle. Then fit the new one and put everything back. Haynes manual is handy if you have one but hope that info helps a little.

The rod which attaches to the door operating mechanism - how do you locate the attachment hole when refitting. Does the rod have any sort of plastic fitting to attach to? Mine became detached n a crash so I have never seen it in its correct position. The Haynes does not look much like mine!
