Hi,

I've just top overhauled my Punto HGT, but during first start up, the tappet really noisy, the mechanic told me it happens because during overhaul the tappet, valve all taken out and cleaned, so the tappet still dont have enough oil, after running for a few days, the sound will disapear,is it true?

Thanks.

If hydraulic tappets are to be reused they should be kept in oil so they are not refitted dry. Before fitting they should be primed with oil. A bit of noise is usual after a rebuild but a short run is normally enough to quieten them down. If the noise carries on get it looked at as the oil feed to them may be blocked/restricted.

How long "short run" u mean? 15 minutes? or 500KM? For your info, my car stucked in the workshop around 5 days before they overhaul the engine...maybe the tappet takes longer time to silent?:D

Previous experience has shown about 10-20 miles has quietened the tappets after refitting, less than that most times. As long as the job was done properly and oil and filter changed they should be quiet by now. Maybe one is faulty or not getting enough oil. How many miles/kms since they were done?
