I've had my Punto now for about 3 months and i've gotten to know a lot about it, found out what everthing is and does etc but i still can't figure out what this port is for, anyone have any ideas? could it be another Diagnostic port or something?

i think its vehicle speed sensor , it is over the gearbox

u will find vehicle speed sensor on the gearbox just look and u will find it easy.

thats the thing ya see, everything in the car works, i make sure to check everything on the car weekly and everything works perfectly, this socket has been sitting there unused since i got the car with seemingly no ill effects.

Knowing Fiat it is there for something that's normally an option or on a higher spec Punto.

We thought we were going to have fun installing a rear wiper on our base model Panda, until we reasised all the wiring was already there along with plugs (like this case), all we had to do wsa connect it all up and install a switch (from a scrappy) on the dash, and bob's your uncle, we were laughing :D:)

thats good to know, hopefully it is for foglights or something so i can get them next :)

Yes.. a lot of cars have the same wiring loom, regardless of the market they're destined for, where they may be supplied with extra equipment. Even top-of-the-range models that seem to have every optional extra going may have unused wiring. So, if everything works, "donawari!"... :D

Down there, I'd guess it may be something to do with the gearbox - perhaps the sensor for to show what gear the car is in (if the Auto has a display on the dash). Etc. A look at a wiring diagram is the only way to know for sure.

It's the connector for the vehicle speed sensor. However, as your vehicle has ABS it isn't needed (vehicle speed is calculated by using the rear ABS wheel sensors) and leaving it on the loom is cheaper and easier for Fiat than making two separate harnesses.
