My Wife's Mk1 ELX gearbox is getting very stiff. Can anybody rec a Fiat or gearbox Specialist in Manchester/Cheshire area.
cheers Gaz

does it click at all?

if so make sure they dont try and rip you off as it only needs a bit of grease in a few places that other people here might know where.

something to do with the slave i think

Sound to be a bit daft but not really know much about these motors.
Any picks to point me to the drain plug & how much to use?
cheers

It at the bottom of the gearbox, at the back. 8mm Allan Key. Should take about 1.75 lires of oil. Fiat Recommend ZC 75. Just one to check first though. Just diconnect the gear linkage cables at the rear of the gear box. They are just on ball joints, just pry them off and see if gear lever is nice and free, If so, sounds to be in the box, if still stiff sounds like gear linkage cables ceased.

Be careful, some 'boxes don't even have drain plugs!

My 55SX's original 'box had both a filler plug on the front of the casing, and a drain plug near the diff casing. But the secondhand 'box from a later 55SX that I fitted (after the original gearbox broke) doesn't have a drain plug, only a filler plug. Bizarre, and how the hell are you supposed to empty the damn thing without removing the whole gearbox?? To drain it before fitting, I had to take the filler plug out, up-end it and pour all the old crap out of it, and then re-fill it with fresh oil once it was on the car. Anyone know why this slightly later gearbox doesn't have the drain?
