Hello punto land

Pig sick tonight as my car is locked in the garage having failed its MOT retest because of the rear fog lamp not working.

Apparently they can get power directly to it from the battery, and the dashboard indicates that the lamp is on anyway.

But they say it could be a fuse, or maybe a relay, or maybe earth

I have a dodgy spade on the offside rear light unit (the earth spade I believe) which was originally causing mixed signals for indicator and brakes, though I rectified thias just by fiddling with the plug and re-routing the wires a bit.

There is a problem on the dash with the clock, which kind of zeroed itself a month or so ago and I've never bothered resetting it.

So, with all that to go on, it's surely just a fuse isn't it? I'm worried sick that 1/ the garage will claim hours of labour to fix the thing, & 2/ that they won't be able to at all without electrical diagnostics.

This car has already cost me a fortune to get mechanical and tyre problems up to scratch. Any help with the fog lamp problem would be muchly appreciated ta. Can't believe I can be off the road with this pretty trivial fault after all the cash i've chucked at the car. If I could go back armed with the info I need it'll be cyber drinks all round.

Please save me :)

bttt

could an earth problem knock out the dashboard clock, confuse the offside indicator/brake light, and knock out the rear fog on the nearside?

and could the indicator/brake light problem be fixed by minor adjustment still leaving the fog lamp problem?

all these things can't be related surely?

and you actually took your car in for MOT without checking it was working first

Its worth a good walk round the car to check the basics a weekly and definitely before the mot is due this gives you chance to put anything right before parting with your £40 odd quid for the MOT then paying for a retest. the amount of cars that fail on no screen wash for example is shocking......

good point!

but no, I had a problem with the lights (including on the dash) as I said and used the MOT to get a clue as to what it was.

i then took it away and sorted the brake/direction lights (which I had already bodged unsuccessfully - they must have yanked at the wires!)

mistake was I didn't notice the fog lamp on the rear nearside wasn't working - still not convinced it actually wasn't working tbh.

the re-test was free, though that was maybe partly because they already had money out of me for a suspension arm!
