Hi, I have a '95 Punto SX75 with 95k on the clock, and it will not pass the MOT emission test for low speed and cold, but passes all the others.
It has had a new cat., Lambra probe, and ignit., coils in the past two to three years. It has had the ECU? sent away to be tested and that came back correct/nothing wrong. It has been to two differant independant MOT garages and they cannot find anything wrong, except it fails on emission.
Can someone help please?

ok, SORRY, you are correct of course, there is no 'cold reading', please let me start again from scratch,
The Punto failed on Exhaust Emission Test. I will attempt to copy the results here:
DESCRIPTION Limits Reading
Engine oil temp Min 80 deg C 85 deg C PASS

Fast idle test FAIL
Engine Speed 2450-2950 rpm 2680 rpm PASS
CO Max 0.30% 11.85% FAIL
HC Max 200 ppm 622 ppm FAIL
Lambda 0.97-1.03 0.70 FAIL

Second fast idle test: FAIL
Engine Speed 2450-2950 rpm 2511 rpm PASS
CO Max 0.30% 13.25% FAIL
HC Max 200 ppm 1503 ppm FAIL
Lambda 0.97-1.03 0.64 FAIL

Natural idle test: FAIL
Engine Speed 800-1000 882 rpm PASS
CO Max 0.35% 8.86% FAIL

Overall Result: Exhaust Emission Test: FAIL
All the rest that I wrote still applies.
I hope this helps to explain what is wrong with my car so I can try to get it fixed? Thank you

Thats quite a good fail.... lol

I know youve had a new lambda, but have you tested it? As sometimes cheap aftermarket ones can be worse than the broken ones they replace...

yeah cheers buddy just found it now , my heads up mi asre at the min lol
plus from the looks of that ... that cat is running wayyyy too rich ...
has it seemed 2 be missfiring any ?

no miss firing, like said before, new cat, new probe, new ign. coils, ECU sent away and tested ok, both MOT garages have tested everything else, all valves etc and all readings come back ok, they said. Its getting to the stage where I'm thinking of sending it into FIAT (££££!) but I cannot think of what else to do, I have left it with one of the MOT garages at the moment and when they have a spare moment, they are going over it again. So apart from the cleaner in the tank for the injectors, can anyone think of anything else?

Dave, sorry you will have to run that past me again, I'm a bit slow

try ur headgasket because it sounds that steam is going into ur piston pots !!!
will send the the emmisions doolaly
 its worth a go because anythings cheaper than maindealers lol

Ok, well I have had the car for the last 8 years at least and had no extras fitted. I wil get in touch with the MOT Garage and ask them to test the probe and use that injector cleaner, I would have thought though that two garages would have come up with that idea themselves.

Parka 21, ok another idea for the garage to try. There is a oil leak on the head, so I suppose if something comes out other things can go in.

yeah buddy should be that ...its all i can think at n i work in a garage lol (y)

Ok, at last, passed the MOT, here is what was done, and a lot was what you all said to do, so a big THANK YOU.
  • used a injector cleaner and gave the engine a good blast.
  • changed the new aftermarket Lambda probe for a genuine Fiat one
  • changed the air and oil filter
  • changed the engine oil
Thanks again for all the ideas, which I passed on to the mechanic, who said 'it has been an experiance'
