Hello - seeing a thread on another rattle reminded me of the one I have in my Mk2 Sporting.

It's a solid metallic rattle, medium-pitch clacking (like a large steel bar would make when hitting something) over rough roads - sounds like the steering column but doesn't seem to be steering-related (does not go away around corners) and pushing up/down on the steering wheel makes no difference/has no slack.

The rattle sounds to be inside the cabin and nearby, somewhere ahead of the steering wheel, i.e. in the dashboard or perhaps the pedal area. Or, perhaps something in the steering column assembly. From the passenger's side, it is definitely in front of the driver.

I don't think it's the wiper linkage as the sound doesn't change when the wipers are on.

Does anyone have any nominations please, before I pull the lower dashboard apart?

Thanks,
-Alex

Hi mate,

There was a recall some time ago for steering column bearing failure on the Mk2s. However, i would have thought you would have had a bit of movement in the steering wheel which you have not. If you do take your dashboard apart, they're worth looking at closely. Also worth checking the UJ at the bottom (although you can check that without taking the dash apart). Only other things behind that bit of dash that i can think of would make that sort of noise if loose is the brake servo unit or the steering rack itself?

Hope you get it sorted mate....rattles are one of those things that if your like me can drive you crazy! lol

Thanks, I shall one day take it apart and have a look, and will dig-up and update this thread then.

Actually, I've just gone outside to check the steering UJs (got the car back today), brake pedal link rod, etc. All is tight.

I think I'll start by fixing the wiper linkage - one of the links drops off its balljoint and clanks against the other link. It could be that the echo-effect of the place where the wiper lives makes it sound as though the rattle is inside the cabin. I plan to make my own linkage with rose joints.
