Car is idling too high after a head gasket change. When you start it from cold it revs really high(which cant be good for a cold motor)for a second or two then settles a bit. When car is warm it idles way higher than it used to.I've checked all things that could have been disturbed when the head work was done but i've drawn a blank. It's now using way more fuel than before gasket change. For quite a while now the Catalytic converter section of the exhaust has been blowing a little, maybe this has been made worse by the manifold coming off?I'm going to replace it anyway,is there a lambda sensor on these?

check you have all the pipes on the inlet manifold sounds like an air leak on the inlet side

All vacuum pipes seem fine, what symptoms does a faulty Lambda sensor give?I've replaced the front pipe and the car is still idling high and using more fuel?

a faulty lamdba sensor will cause a number of issues, my punto mark 1 did that after its head gasket was replaced, it idled at 1,500 revs, but after a few hundred miles its tickover dropped to 900 rpm which is about right

I was told before it may settle down in time. The thing that i don't like more than anything else is how high it revs when you start it from cold,i always cringe when i start it.

Went into my local car parts emporium yesterday, knew the guy used to work for Fiat and he knew a lot about them from selling parts for them too over the years. Two things he told me which have helped a little.a)Disconnect the battery for 20 minutes and b)Don't know if theres truth to this but he said you shouldn't switch the car on quickly and turn the key all the way round without stopping, you have to wait for the little key symbol to go out on the dash?Like a quicker version of the glow plug light in a diesel?Doesn't say that in my handbook?
