hey all, basically i want to wire my towbar up, have done for months, i put the towbar on and never found out how to do it i just took it off.

i've just spent a while on the internet and the forum but all i seem to find is what each colour of wire does, i have that written down.

what i need to know is, do i join the tow bar socket onto the lights? if so how do i do it and where do i do it? do i have to cut wires etc..

any help with that would be great!

My sister has a 53 plate punto and she got a letter from fiat saying not to tow with it because its liable to cause major chassis damage or failure. They even went as far to offer her a full refund for the car if she needed it to tow with. I would check this with your local main dealer just in case!!!

 i'll have to look into that, wonder if it matters on the doors.. 3/5dr. mines the 5.

thanks for that!

your towing with a 1.2?!

Plenty big enough an engine!

Really. I've seen lots of Punto's with tow bars:eek:

same.. i saw 3 yesterday, one looks quite good with the chrome type cover.

when i had mine on i removed the ball and other bit the ball goes on and you can't see it (y)

i'm just dying to get my trailor sorted, it's more to help my uncle carrying building stuff around.

as for the wiring i don't want to end up cutting into wires on the rear lights if i don't need to.

alex its easy to do (does yours have a bulb failure monitoring??) if not its a bit easyer as you dont have to wire in a 7 way bypass relay but for safety sakes of the cars loom its worth doing have a look at the guide i did for my GP..

i'd have preferred to solder rather than use scotch hooks but the towbar center used scotch hooks and i didn't want to disturb them (the original relay they fitted died so i fitted a better unit)

hope that helps

that's great! i've had a read.. seems a bnit too complex for me TBH but i'll have another look, i've never been too confident with electrics.

thanks for the links!

its not that complex to be honest think of it as making the wire longer...

take the brake lights for arguments sake....

this is Pin 6 on the towbar socket

7%20pin%20wiring%20-%20colour.gif

this is the pin at 1/4 past one in the socket.... which is wired RED

(you still following)

this RED used to be scotch locked onto the brake light wire

instead this goes to terminal 6 on the relay

and you scotch lock or solder the red wire on the relay to the brake light wire..

and so on for the other 5 terminals (not counting reverse or earth..)

then the earth from the relay and the earth from the socket (pin 3) need to be crimped together and attached to the chassis..

and you need a live feed from the battery fused with a 20A fuse (think of wiring in a sub supply)

the relay has 8 wires from it (one white to earth) (all coloured as per the light socket) and 7 terminals (one of the 8 wires is reverse)

the 8th gray wire is for a reversing light so ignore that one as you arnt fitting a 12S (white caravan socket)

hope that makes it a bit clearer

also with that relay there is no need to fit a Flash repeater for the trailer indicators as its set in the relay so no messing about with that(y)

Hope that clears it up a bit if you brake it down into one circuit at a time you should have no problems its when you pull and strip the towbar socket wires into the boot along with the 8 wires on the relay it can start to look like a bowl of spaghetti

any more Q's i'll do my best to help (y)

I cant see why you cant spur off from your amp as long as you fuse it down. unless the amp draws that much power your trailer lights will flash in time to the music :p

kit to buy for the job,,

Relay (see towsure link)
http://www.towsure.com/product/13145-Smart_7_Way_Can-Bus_Relay

12N socket and mounting hardware (bracket)

2 mtrs of 7 core trailer wire

1.5 to 2 mtrs of 2 core twin 1.5mm is fine if yous stuck look in a DIY store for table lamp wire (this is to link to the + supply to right hand indicator and side light cluster back to the left of the boot where you will mount the relay ) say you scotch hook the Blue wire to the indicator this should be through crimped to the green wire on the relay and the brown wire to the side light connected to the brown wire on the relay

Black silicone to seal cable hole in grommit

a Reel of Single core 20Amp rated cable

7 scotch hooks

7 Way Bypass relay

2 blue through crimps (for right hand side indicator and sidelamp)

a blue eyelet crimp

Fuse holder and associated spade crimps

Soldering iron / solder,

Screwdriver,

wire cutters,

stanly knife

wire strippers

insulating tape

Cable ties..

A working lighting board is handy to test

here is a photo of the famous relay

the row of terminals should be self explanatory now as you can see there is no #3 as this is the Earth pin of the socket so that connection is made to the cars chassis with the relays white wire..

the 12V is the 12Volt feed

the TT is Tell Tail + 12v supply so you can fit an optional lamp to flash on your dash in time to the indicators (not that its needed as it has a beeper built in)
