Hello everyone i'm hoping someone can help me with a problem i've got.

Been thinking about it for a while and finally decided to take the plunge and smooth side my black punto mk2 cos I thought it would look better without the strips.

I'm not a car person particularly but the guides etc. made it look a simple enough job so i gave it a go.

Started on the drivers side and started taking off the long strip on drivers door slowly with hot water and it came off pretty quick with only a little residue glue which i took off with wd40/matalan card combo lol.

moved onto the small strip to left of the drives door and used the same technique only to find after removing it some paintwork had come off with it

i have no idea how to get this paintwork looking like normal again so could anyway help me out in what to do?

pictures of the damage below.

looks like your car has been sprayed before and wasnt prepared properly that whole panel will need to be sprayed again to get it looking decent you wont be able to just touch that up

Yeah thats what i thought as it's had some accident damage at the back from a previous owner.

Any idea what costs etc. that would involve?

Getting that whole panel resprayed will be tres expensif

A bodyshop might be able to redo that small section and blend it into the rest of the panel. It will look good, and be cheaper than getting the whole panel done, but still cost quite alot...

We use a mobile sprayer in ashbourne to do jobs like yours would cost about £100 :)

shame i'm up in Stockport then lol

Is it that hard to do yourself? are there any guides to prepping and resprayin a panel on this forum? can't find anything on the search :(

i have a general idea how to do it but a guide would be great to look over and possible use. Thanks very much for all your help btw (y)

Hmm i don't think there is a guide... If you wanted to spray that section yourself i'd say the usual method of sanding down, primer, paint, then a couple coats of lacquer. Black blends easier then other colours, but you will look more or less like a touch up job unless you get a pro to do it methinks :(

It would be better for you to get it done by a pro, they have lots of patience and can blend in the new colour with the old really well. Just as a guide I am having: Rear panel, door and front wing all resprayed for £200, even though we do know the fella doin it.

i never reccomend using hot water to remove bages and bump strips etc because it doesnt soften the glue properly and things like this happen.

always use a hair dryer to warm the whole lot up to ensure that the glue behind has softened nicely before trying to take the strips off.

i use a heat gun but i am very quick at it as i do it all the time wen repairing doors and rear quarters etc.

to me the only way to repair that would be to block the damaged area down to loose all the flaky paint and scotch up to the crease line on the rear quarter. it would then need to be repainted and lost through the rear quarter and edge where it meets the door

Thanks for the replies.

I've managed to get 1 quote for the work as not had time to go round all the dif places for them to look at it yet.

Said it would be £210 to paint the offside quarter panel and another £110 if i wanted the whole side painted so it matched colour.

Asked a Chipsaway guy who is one of my neighbours and he sed they'd probably do it for around £175 for just the quarter panel.

wot a rip off mate ! from both

dont use chips away there ****e the amount of work we have had to rectify from them is unreal.

you would only need to paint that part of the rear quarter so if any1 tells you otherwise there full of crap.

that paint is easy to match and will blend in perfectly through the rear. you are looking at about 80-90 quid to sort that

yeah leave it to a pro your gunna need alot of thinners etc to blend in the colour.. you should be looking at around £150 - £200 in a body shop....

dnt let them take the P**S tho,, they might start tryin to con u an say you need the whole side done.. thats bull! they might just respray that whole pannel an a bit of your door just to blend..

(just a bit of advice wen removeing vynals etc try using a hair dryer an heat it up, not to much tho! it softens the strip an glue an comes off all in 1... not advisable on windows in cold weather :D)
