This morning I went for a short drive in my Mk2 JTD and when I got to my destination I noticed that the red engine management light was on even though the car seemed to drive fine. I switched the engine off and then started it back up again and the light was no longer on and then about 5 seconds later the car revved itself upto 2000rpm and the light came back on, then it held the revs at about 2000rpm for a few seconds then they dropped to idle speed. Then it revved itself upto about 3000rpm and a few seconds later the revs dropped to idle speed, then it revved itself upto 4000rpm and then again the revs dropped to idle speed.

I then switched the engine off as people would think I was sat in my car revving it up like a chav.

I need to go out again in about 30 mins, fingers crossed it drives ok. :)

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Well, engine management light has come back on today. It's got a different problem though this time.

The car has absolutely no power at all, the boost never seems to kick in. It won't rev above 3100rpm.

It started happening after I cleaned the GSR induction kit with WD40, I've done this before and have never had this problem. Infact Peter said to clean it with WD40 so I don't see how this could cause the problem. I only cleaned the silicon tubing with it, I didn't get it near the MAF or any of the other connections.

I have tried disconnecting the MAF and it made no difference and I have checked all the connections on the GSR kit and they all seem tight.

Any ideas?

That's what I'm trying to do, trying to find someone with a code reader as I can't really afford a Fiat diagnostic or even a back street garage diagnostic atm.

Btw just to clarify I cleaned the outside of the GSR kit, I cleaned it with it in situ - I didn't clean the inside (someone on another forum thought I meant that I cleaned it on the inside).

Maybe I could buy a code reader from Halfords, read the codes and then return it in the same afternoon. :chin:

when accelerating as you go past 3krpm does it feel as though there's a drop in power? (more noticable on part throttle)
as this is what mine did, i reset the ecu and it was back to normal

There's no power across the whole rev range and it literally won't rev above 3100rpm, e.g. if I'm in 2nd gear with my foot to the floor it will take ages to reach 3100rpm and when it does reach that it won't rev any higher as if there is a rev limiter in place at that RPM.

I'm guessing it's in limp home mode?

could be but i thought that would limit you to 30-40mph

Unplug The Airflow Meter And Go For A Drive With It Unplugged If Its Faulty It Will Drive Fine Then Plug It Back In Again If Fault Still There The Air Flow Mweter Has Had It.
Failing That If Still Running Bad With Unplugged Remove And Cleane The Egr Valve And Try Again.

I've already tried running it with the MAF disconnected (read one of my earlier posts in this thread) and it made no difference.

As far as I know the EGR valve is not simple to remove and if you're going to remove it you may as well replace it with a new one.

What's 10k boost and how do I use it?

its a spray like carb cleaner, there's a diesel specific one, you can get it from hellfrauds and some motorfactors
instructions are on the box

the 1st time i used it in mine there was loads of black smoke from the exhaust, the 2nd time about 14months later only a little smoke
i also used it in my 160k mile alfa 75 and it ran much smoother and better mpg

What did you do ?

I'm not sure what actually fixed it but I took the MAF sensor out and checked it was in the correct orientation in the GSR kit (looked at the airflow arrow on it, it was in the correct orientation) and then put it all back together. Then I took the car out for a drive (with MAF sensor connected) and it seemed to have regained most of it's power but the engine management light was still on. I gave the car a good thrashing for a few minutes and the engine management light went out and the car seems to have regained full power now. :)
