hi there,

i been having rear suspension problem with my car now for months but its gradualy getting worse so i really need to sort it now. what i have noticed is this, when the rear suspension compresses alot while driving like when you acceletare away while turning and car leans i hear a grind noise from rear of car. also i heard it the other day when traveling up hill and over speed bump. when the back wheels came down i heard a split second grind noise again. this problem is worse the more people you have in the car. when i have 2 others in car it can happen alot over lumps. i dearent load my car up. to me the noise sounded like a grind or posible tyre rubbing. i took it to a garage for quick check today they said couldnt see anything obvious but he thought rear passenger side tyre had been rubbing on arch i couldnt see it but he said he could feel. there were no marks on the tyres but he was feeling the indside edge of the arch.

my car is completly standard. wheels are the standard punto sporting alloys with origional tyres on back.and suspension has never been touched since it came out of the factory. the car has done 50k miles

so my question is if it is the tyre rubbing on the arch
could worn springs or shocks cause the rear suspension to be to soft and there for compress to much sending wheels into arch?

any other ideas of what it may be?

the rear suspension does seem pretty soft if i open the boot and push down on the boot sill it goes down quiet away, i tried the bounce test for my shocks but still cant tell if they right or not. i can push car down about inch then bounce it, then it stops boucning and the last inch comes up.

2001 Punto sporting in sprint blue with matching Mr Bump air freshner all together now mmmmmmm

I have the same problem(se another thread below), my friend (trained mechanic) said that its probebly the shockers and that I should change the shockers and springs on the same time. Back seems quite easy to change and cheap aswell, not more than 80£ for all the parts.

I can tell u exactly what the problem is

Its ur rear trailing arms the bushings will have gone this happened on my car! one way to check is to take hold of the wheel asuming its alloy and see if you can wiggle it in and out(May take some force)

Each side costs about 150 including labour but is an essential job to get sorted or your rear wheels may just collapse!!
I can almost garentee this is your problem try turning hard left and hard right see if u get the grinding on both sides
Let me no if u want more info on this problem!

like the man said, radius arm bushes.
if you look at the car from behind you will see the wheels point inwards at the top of the wheel (negative camber) they should be dead stright on puntos.

hello fish dude, yep ive got the same problemo on me barchetta (punto underpinnings), im playing to lash out on some fancy synthetic polymer stylee bushes. Was wondering which route you ended up taking to resolve this, and best supplier etc??
I notice that "powerflex" have universal bushings which probably fit, but what size to order?
Also my car is horrendously noisy at the front as well, around speed bump obsessed goteborg, im ordering bumpstops and front bushings from powerflex, will that do the trick???

any replies gratefully received )

Ta  Ben!

hi, turns out the rididculous speed bumps and off road track called gothenburg has trashed the rear swing arm bearings, which have been replaced in their entirety (kerching - whole swing arms). maybe the 30mm sunk rear springs didnt help the geometry.:bang:
thanks for your help though. ben:idea:

Im adding to this to help people that have this problem in the future. I read on here thinking arm bushes, springs, shocks what the hell is it? Well my answer was the rear Axel, it had bent and set my wheels on an inclind position thus pushing the upper regions of the wheels outwards rubbing on the edges of my cars arches ruining any new tyres on the edges that I put on.

So always make sure your wheels are straight and your axel is straight!

Hello,

Do you know if the front suspension has oil also inside? From what I know, are with gas...

I saw that on the left one there's some oil. Might need to be changed?

Thanks

They all have oil in. Some have gas but also contain oil anyway. So if you see oil loss in the shock the shock is shot.
