I think my clutch is ****ed (juddering, whining, just started slipping) and I'm going to change it. I don't see much point in replacing it with a crappy fiat one if its only going to last as long as this one, though. Any ideas where I can pick up a Valeo or even a Luk? Model is a Mk2 1.2 8v btw.

Cheers.

1. there's a good chance your car was fitted with a valeo clutch in the first place fiat used both valeo and borg beck in mk2s it all depends were they were made they were produced in a number of factories

valeo are the good ones borg beck are rubbish

2. your clutch regardless of make should last the life of the vehicle so if it's slipping it can only be attributed to bad driving

you can pick up a valeo clutch from any good motor factors or ek's for about 40 quid

:ROFLMAO:
where you get that idea?

i'm talking about the actual lining here not the release bearing or judder problems that we all know mk2s suffer from so much

you have to be a really bad driver to actually cause a clutch to wear out and slip inside of 100k miles

my dad has run many cars well past this mark and never worn a clutch out in his life so there there's no excuse

anyway dave you drive an auto so your practically on your way towards oap driving anyway

i have had loads of manuals before, and ive never had a clutch out last the car. i have never even heard of it often, normally by 80k they dead.
oap driving is good dont end up driving on the roof then :p

ooooo thats harsh

anyway i just started striping bits from my car and the date stamps on my clutch say it's original and it is still plenty thick and felt very light with good feel after 10 years and 83k miles al be it i only did about 10k of those miles

my dads current alfa has 111k miles on it his clutch is still good and is original as he saw it when he fit his new crank he was guna put in a new clutch at the same time but felt there to be no point as it was still good

he had a fiat croma 2.0ie from new many years ago and drove on the same clutch for over 130k

his last alfa had 128k when the engine reved round to 13k or more and bent some things not sure on the age of that clutch but it was fine when he had it from about 60k onwards

there are many taxi drivers in my area with doblo vans with more than 100k on there original clutches and one owned buy an ageing italian with more than 200k on the clock

ok i rest my case clutches can do 100k easy

As you've said that it's difficult to wear out your clutch lining so easily, I'm starting to think it didn't really slip and I just imagined it. It was a couple of days ago and it seemed to happen twice and seemed ever so slight, but the car hasn't done it since. Maybe a bit of water or something on the lining? It was raining. (Still is...and I wanted to change the oil and rocker cover gasket today...)

I do thrash the car a bit on rare occassions I must admit. Usually when I get up late and have to rush to work lol. I've only had it for about 4000 miles though and the rest of the car is in excellent condition.

Heh, if I get a clutch from Fiat will it be a Valeo? I should have asked the bloke but I never thought. Went and picked up some oil, filter, plugs etc today and he quoted me £57 for one.

Cheers for all the help!

i'm not sure more than likely it will be valeo that's what they tend to supply

Depends on the car though doesnt it, I had a BMW 520i 24v with 197k on its original clutch, but I once ran a 1.1i Fiesta that only made 75k on its clutch, due to size, make of clutch etc etc, its not all to do with driving styles as I drove both those cars for many 1000s of miles!

you cant say because the clutch hasnt lasted the life of the vehicle its been driven badly...infact, thats utter tosh.

theres a few more contributing factors to clutch wear than you clearly think.
