Hi new member here.
It's actually my girlfriends car but seeing as I have to do all the work on it, this seems to be the best place to find out whats what.

I used her car to jump start mine after it had been lying for a few weeks. Got mine going but when she drove hers to the shops the injection warning light stayed on and the car is running rough as hell, sounds like its not completely firing on all cylinders and wants to stall but not quite. There was also a smell under the bonnet like burning rubber or something similar. ;)

I've checked the archives and the possibles seem to be coils, lambda or EGR.

Whats the most likely and is there any checks I can do before I start shedding out money for parts. Where are the coils and is there any checks that can be done with a multimeter or something?

Cheers

Andy

You did not say what model/year it is, but the coils do fail on old and new versions, but the 99onwards also have the ecu failure this stops switching one of the coils, there is a software update recall out for these, so you will be contacted by post but if its only running on 2 cylinders you need to get it attended too

Hi and welcome:)

coils are at other end of plug leads if no spark posible coil pack,

the car seems to be working fine this morning. maybe i just upset it temporarily when i used it to jump start mine. :)

Maybe it prefers Sainsburys or Asda?! :p;)

Sorry, good luck with fixing her car :)

Fixed maybe... we'll find out tomorrow.

Anyway, if anyones interested it looks like the rear ignition coil.

Very weak spark on #1 although 4 was ok (i know they are on the same coil). Also, the resistance on the primary winding was fluctuating quite a bit away from the recommended readings between when the car was working fine and when it had problems.

So, 1 coil being fitted tomorrow so hopefully that will cure the problem.
