Hiya,

I've a 1998 Fiat Punto that was working fine...however the last 2 days the heater isn't actually heating, it's blowing out cold air. No obvious leaks or anything that I can see. Someone at work suggested the coolant and/or water in the engine may be low, could this be true? To be honest I haven't topped up the water or antifreeze for a while so will try this....any other suggestions?

Thanks!:)

Check coolant levels and other areas such as oil cap with a mayo colour substance in then it could be expensive news i.e headgasket

yes it could be low walet levels, check it fill it up and bleed it, and fill again if nexessarily, make sure its running with the heater on when you bleed it though.

topped up the fluid levels this morning and lo and behold the heater is working again! Thanks for your help!:D

Unfortunately what you have found is a common Fiat fault, especially with the Mk1 Punto's. Your heater matrix has developed a common leak. I would imagine your footwell is damp or wet from the leaking coolant.
Don't worry, a new one would cost £400 to fit etc as its a good 10 hours labour removing the dashboard etc etc.
What you need is to get 2 bottles of Radwell, and add it to your water reservoir. Run the engine until it is warm, a good few miles will do the trick. And the radwell will act as a resin filler throughout the pipework and stop the leak. Your heater will be back to normal in no time at all.
Sadly your water levels were low due to the leak in the first place.
Radwell I believe is about £4 a bottle
hope this helps

Radwell is only a temporary fix though isn't it?

Heater matrix is easy enough to do yourself, parts only cost £60ish..

Sure the dash has to come out, but if you're patient it's easy as tying a shoelace :D (as long as you can tie shoelaces)

No leak to be found at all- I think the culprit was a missing cap on the water resevior- when I went to fill it I found that the screw cap was missing, so the water must have been bubbling up and coming out the top! I'm off to Halfords to get a replacement cap!

Doesn't mean your problems are all solved to be honest.

If it runs down again after say 3/4 weeks you could still have a big problem i.e head gasket.

ok well I'll see what happens...thanks for all your suggestions:)

This is a very old thread for the mk1 punto, yours will be (I assume from the age) a grande punto, would be worth ignoring this old post and putting your own up in the grande punto section of the site
