Punto Diesel intermittent starting fault

Hello all FF members

I have joined the forum as I'm frustrated with an intermittent fault with my 53reg Punto diesel (not JTD).

I have owned the car from 3 months old, and it's been brilliant.

The fault has occurred about 8 times since last summer.

The fault can occur when the car is cold or warm, after a stop for fuel or kebab etc.

When the fault occurs the engine turns over well enough, but the engine won't fire most of the time, if it does fire it will only tick over for around 30 seconds and any throttle movement won't increase revs.

If the ignition is on the there is fuel pumping to the filter, although the last Green flag mechanic that came out, thought the pump in the tank wasn't working until he banged the tank, but the car still didn't start.

If I leave the car for an hour or so the car starts and can be fine for another week or month.

Can anyone help?

M.

sounds like crank sensor fault but that would not explain the inability to rev

can you give more detail of your engine

i'm guesing it's 1.9 diesel on a common rail by 53 plate

or do they still have distributor type pump on that plate not sure

Re: Punto Diesel intermittent starting fault

I've just checked the log book and it say it's a JTD.

Sorry for the misinformation.

ok well it might be the modified throttle control vale they become detached from the vacuum pot and close the air off at random

that would explain non revving also

Re: Punto Diesel intermittent starting fault

Have you had any luck fixing this issue? I have exactly the same problem on a punto 53 diesel. Its been on going for 3 months and after spending £500 on a new crank sensor and ignition (both of which were recommended by a garage) the same thing is happening.

The car starts fine, if I restart it within a couple of hours of the previous journey it either wont start at all or it starts, sounds like its running on 2 cylinders and lots of black smoke and the throttle does not respond at all.

Leave if for a couple more hours and it will be ok. Some times its fine but it makes filling up at the garage a risky business!

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Mark

Re: Punto Diesel intermittent starting fault

Just had the issue again and I noticed that the air pipe from the filter to the engine was not connected correctly and definitely not sealed. So I pushed it on and i started fine. However I dont know if its fixed as if pull the pipe off the engine still starts. I think there are a combination of issues but I'm hoping I may have found something..

Dont know if its relevant, but I had similar trouble with Omega TD (Bosch electronics) it just would not start when hot.
Eventually traced to fuel temperature sensor, I think its located in filter body.
I know that some Fiat use similar sensor, and they are quite cheap (15)ish.

Thank you for the tip, I was hoping it was the air pipe however its failed to start twice since then. I'll see if I can change the sensor. Its a real shame the car had been perfect up and until now where its a complete liability.
