Hi Guys,

need to replace my PAS on my punto mk2.

Decided to buy the entire column (reconditioned) and fit it myself as that seems to be the cheapest way.

Only thing i'm not sure of is whether i need to match the ECU number on the reconditioned unit to the number on my broken column, or do you only need to do this when ur just buying the ECU seperately?

Also, any ideas on an easy way to find the ECU number? Don't really fancy taking the whole steering wheel off just to get the number (specially as i'll have to re-attach it so i can drive the car while i wait for my new column).

Guys - help please!!!!

If i buy a reconditioned steering column (punto mk2) do i need to match the number on the ecu unit or can i just buy any old column?

no any column will work aslong as you give the supplier year model engine exc they know what there doing

if your getting the bits from a scrapper then you need to be careful what you get

fitting yourself is easy

few simple rules don't turn the new column before you fit it it should come locked in some position if not don't worry to much

do it with wheels straight ahead of course

do not turn the clock spring for air bag wires and horn keep it in the position it was in when you removed the wheel maybe use some sticky tape to lock it

and then take it to nearest fiat dealer and explain to them what you have done and ask them to calibrate it and clear any faults there may be as it's a new ecu this step is vital and should never be overlooked yes it's going to cost you about 40 to 60 quid

bottom of column goes on in 4 positions and top will only go onto wheel in one iirc so may have to work out which way makes the steering straight

i may be wrong on that last one fitted so many on different models it's all confusing
