Engine ticks over won't start??
Immobilizer/key light has began to stay on??
Ticking/clicking sound coming from under the dash??

Is it immobilizer/electric problem??

Possible solutions

New Key??

Faulty Immobilizer??

ECU??

Fuel Pump??

Any info or possible solutions welcome:confused:

Hi mate,

You sure its a 1.8? and not a 1.9? Is it a JTD (turbo) or none turbo? Mk1 1.7 TD? 1.7D?

When you say the key code light has begun to stay on, do you mean it doesn't go out when you begin to turn over the engine? If so then it means the immobilizer wil not be turning off, and this in turn will be why the engine isnt starting.

As to why this is happening could be a number of things. Have you changed or done any work on the car recently? Has it been working normally up until now?

Alan

Its say's 1.8 on the log book(v5) could be a 1.7 - not sure if its a turbo - don't think it is - but it is a mk2 - this is an irish van could bve different to uk model??

The car/van was runnig grand but would take a while to start sometimes - you would leave for a minute or two and it would start - then it just wouldn't start at all - the Key light (imob) would knock off at first - even put a new battery in her - but now the key light stays on - might be just not enough power in the battery. Nothing was touched on the car - was told getting a new key cut might solve this??

thanks for the imput Alan

is it a mk1 or mk2 as it could potentially be either on a 2000 reg specially as it's import

if it's mk1 which key are you using red or blues and which keys do you have may help me give some idea of what you have done

if it's mk2 well it's gona be a dealer fix there's nothing anyone can do with these cars to fix em unless you are a dealer or work at one and know exactly what your doing

Its a MK2 - Going to scrap her rather than fix her - taking her to a dealer ain't worth the hassle or money:(

well dealer may find it's something as simple as a broken aerial around the ignition barrel or loss of earth to dash harness an in expensive item to replace so worth having a diagnosis if nothing else

Yeah I agree - but to get a fiat dealer to do a call out in Ireland would cost £££s and mention fiat to an independant and they run like tha clappers - I was going to try the ariel and maybe a new key but me not too bothered - probably worth more for scrap??

Yeah me might try that, might just go to a fiat garage and get the antena - was told the key can lose the code but not going to bother with a new key - also I was told to check for loose earth wires - where would these most likely be??

Thanks again

as you sit in drivers seat there is and earth about 4 inches from your knee behind the trim on the centre console if you will you'll have to take of the bottom half of it and look up

there is also one near the floor under the carpet up near the right hand door pillar iirc

fiat keys have not been known to just lose a code this would only happen if the key had been struck or impacted very hard to break the capsule and it's contents it's the size of a grain of rice and moulded into the plastic of the key so unlikely

it's not going to be an earth problem as the body computer is functioning when you turn the key otherwise there would be no instruction to light the key code lamp

the fact the light is lit means the body computer has a fault code stored in it regarding the problem which can easily be read buy anyone with a scanner

you could test the key code aerial yourself i you have a test meter

simply locate the aerial by removing bottom column shroud 3x 3mm ak's and lifting the top one a bit

you will see it's a black plastic ring around the ignition barrel with a wire leading from it

not sure if the wire plugs into the ring or you may have to follow the wire until you come to a plug either way you want to unplug it and connect a multimeter the ring side of the wiring to check that it hasn't gone open circuit

i believe they should show something like 15hms but i can't remember off hand

Thanks littlepip17.

They key code light used to go of at first so I was reconing it only started coming on due to a weak battery??

The reason I said the key was that the key has seen better days and looks like it got a couple of smacks?

Would one of them cheap fault code readers do the business and if so would you know exactly what the problem was from this code?? I don't want to be spending money on this van if its not worth fixing?(n)

no only fiat can read codes regarding keys as they don't have to release these codes

cheap code readers can only read engine and gearbox faults ie things that can cause increased emissions as these have to be released as per European regulations
